In an Esquire interview, Mike Flanagan spoke about helming Ouija: Origin of Evil. He said,
"I have an allergy to sequels and remakes in general. With this one, when I was first talking to [Jason] Blum, he told me they were really happy with the financial performance of the first movie, but no one involved had illusions about the critical response. So he said, "If we're going to get another bite at this apple because the movie performed so well, we really want to differentiate it, we really want it to be something that's it's own thing."'
He further credited Blum for convincing him to do Ouija: Origin of Evil.
"The connections to the first movie weren't as important to them as making a good movie. If we hadn't had that conversation right off the bat, I wouldn't have pursued it at all."
Throughout his long career, Flanagan has primarily worked on films and shows within the horror genre. He made his directorial debut in 2011 with Absentia. This was followed by Oculus, Hush, Before I Wake, Gerald's Game, and Doctor Sleep. His recent release, The Life of Chuck, has been his only non-horror film to date.
Besides films, Flanagan has also made television shows like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass, among others.
