What's Murder in Monaco all about?
Murder in Monaco is about the murder of rich banker Edmond Safra. He was a Lebanese-Brazilian national whose death is the main subject of this film. Besides being a banker, Safra was also involved in several charity works. Safra came from a banking family and continued his family tradition in different countries, like Switzerland and Brazil.
December 3, 1999, marked Safra's demise at the age of 67 in Monaco. This was due to a fire that is reported to have been caused by arson. The fire took place at his luxury penthouse, and his death was covered massively by the media. Safra was inside the bathroom where he, along with his nurse Vivian Torrente, passed away. One suspicious thing was that Safra did not have his bodyguards with him that night.
After the incident, Daniel Serdet, who was Monaco's attorney general, made a revelation. He said that Safra's security head, Samuel Cohen, had informed him that the billionaire did not need any guards for the night. Ted Maher, who was another nurse at Safra, was subsequently arrested. The authorities suspected that he planned the fire to gain attention for saving him.
Maher's statement spoke about home invasion and him getting stabbed. It turns out that he was lying and that he had knifed himself. Maher had lit a piece of toilet paper to switch on the fire alarm. But the fire spread, and he fainted. Maher was given a ten-year prison sentence.
The documentary has many interviews with several individuals associated with the case, including journalists, cops, and people close to Safra. We can also expect the film to feature several news archival footage of that night, as well as media reporting. Scene reenactments are also a part of the documentary.
Netflix will release Murder in Monaco on December 17 this year.
