Descendants star Sofia Carson joins Corey Mylchreest in My Oxford Year, a romantic comedy film is scheduled to be released on Netflix on August 1, 2025. Carson and Mylchreest aren't new to the streamer since they both had their big breakthrough there. For Carson, it was Purple Hearts, and for Mylchreest, it was Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

My Oxford Year brings these two Netflix stars together for another heartwarming affair set at Oxford University. Carson appears as an American student, who moves to London with a plan. However, it changes when she crosses paths with Mylchreest's charming character. The film is based on Julia Whelan's novel of the same name.

Melissa Osborne (My Fault: London) and Allison Burnett (Ask Me Anything) have written the screenplay while Iain Morris, known for his work on the comedy show The Inbetweeners, has directed it.

What is the story of My Oxford Year?

Love is in the air for Anna and Jamie in the latest Netflix romance. Its official logline reads:

"When Anna, an ambitious young American woman, sets out for Oxford University to fulfill a childhood dream, she has her life completely on track until she meets a charming and clever local who profoundly alters both of their lives."

Carson and Mylchreest's chemistry is the winning formula behind this romance, says director Iain Morris.

“They bounced off each other from the first moment they worked together and clearly enjoyed trying to make each other laugh, and maybe cry? I hope watching the film allows the audience to run through all the emotions associated with the wonderful, noisy, chaotic, unexpected, funny, heartbreaking experience that is falling in love.”

What to expect from My Oxford Year?

Set in Oxford, this Sofia Carson starrer might be a little different than the rest of the bunch. Literature and poetry are a big part of what makes it special, according to Carson herself.

“It was an honor and joy to dive into Anna’s world of dreams, of love, of poetry. To study the great poets that walked the halls of Oxford, and who have since filled our lives with the magic of literature. In 1833, Alfred Tennyson wrote ‘It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.’ Two hundred years after Tennyson so beautifully uttered those words, they ring truer than ever — in the halls of Oxford, and within the heart of our film.”

Carson's co-star, Corey Mylchreest was born and brought up in London and had a similar experience as Anna in his younger years. He reveals how that informed his acting process and his collaboration with Carson. When asked about their love story, he further adds,

“You can expect some laughs, a lot of love, maybe some sadness, a couple of surprises along the way, but [you can expect] to meet two really lovely, very human characters and all of their amazing friends and family. Get ready for a lovely journey.”

My Oxford Year will be available to watch on Netflix from August 1, 2025.
