Nearly a decade later, Shin Godzilla gets a stunning 4K revival on HBO Max

Shin Godzilla, one of the most acclaimed Godzilla films, is receiving a brand new 4K restoration. It's being brought back to life and will be available to stream on HBO Max sometime after September 1.

The film is a part of a major franchise, which invites a fair share of strong opinions from the franchise fans. While some viewers were a fan of what it wanted to say, others didn't like how the creature looked in this movie as compared to others. Yet, no matter what, the restoration update comes as an exciting update for most of them.

Shin Godzilla will be a part of the latest slate of projects to start streaming on HBO Max. In line with this, Royce Battleman, who handles Warner Bros. Discovery's Global Content acquisitions, said,

“HBO Max’s continued partnership with GKIDS indicates our commitment to bringing world-class Japanese animation and original films to our audiences. This deal, which introduces masterpieces and fan favorites to streaming for the very first time, allows us to continue delivering premium films to our subscribers and solidifies HBO Max’s position as a leading destination in the space.”

What is Shin Godzilla on HBO Max about?

Directed by Shinji Higuchi alongside Hideaki Anno, with a script by Anno, the film brought Toho back, reportedly through a third reboot for this 29th film in the franchise. It was a major commercial success upon its release, paving the way for future projects in the movie series. Its official plot synopsis reads as follows,

"A gigantic creature emerges from the sea and destroys the city of Tokyo. The government officials must come up with a plan to destroy it quickly, as its strength is evolving very rapidly."

While produced by Toho Pictures with Cine Bazar, GKIDS acquired its North American distribution rights. Soon, through its licensing deal with HBO Max, the 4K remastered version will debut on the streamer.
