Michael Caine is making his return to acting for a sequel to The Last Witch Hunter, nearly a decade after the original release. Announced by Lionsgate, the film is bringing back Caine and Vin Diesel in the lead, as the follow-up to the 2015 fantasy hit that redefined the latter's career.
The film is being handled by Lionsgate and Diesel's One Race films, who are eager to expand on a piece that has found cultural longevity and relevance among fans even years after it's release. Although The Last Witch Hunter opened to mixed reviews during it's release, it has now become a cult classic, climbing Netflix charts and titles.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group spoke to Deadline about the project and said,
“The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and re-watch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world. Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry. I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”

What was The Last Witch Hunter about?
The Last Witch Hunter is where medieval curses crash into modern skyscrapers, with Vin Diesel leading the charge as Kaulder, an immortal warrior doomed to outlive everyone he loves. Eight centuries earlier, Kaulder struck down the Witch Queen after she unleashed the Black Plague, but her dying curse left him unable to die. Immortality sounds cool until you’ve spent hundreds of years slaying witches, fighting ancient magic, and watching the world move on without you.
By the present day, Kaulder works with a secret order called the Axe and Cross to keep the fragile peace between witches and humans. His only constant is Dolan, the priestly advisor passed down through generations, played by Michael Caine. When the 36th Dolan is mysteriously attacked and dark magic resurfaces, Kaulder discovers that the Witch Queen’s heart was preserved, giving her a path back from the grave. With the help of Chloe, played by Rose Leslie, a dream-walking witch, Kaulder must face the impossible: his old enemy is reborn.
Packed with firestorms, lightning-charged swords, betrayals, and shadowy covens, the film is part gothic fantasy, part action spectacle. Though critics were harsh, audiences gave it $147 million worldwide; enough to give fans hope for a sequel.
