"A homemade variety show in my living room": Britt Lower shares details of her annual Christmas pageant

Britt Lower is one of those celebrities who has a distinctive way of celebrating the holidays. She spoke to PEOPLE exclusively to reveal one of her favorite days of the year, and no, it is not exactly Christmas. During the Golden Globes First-Time Nominee Celebration at The Maybourne in Beverly Hills, Lower told PEOPLE that she is still in the "afterglow."

Britt revealed the festive secret, saying:

"It's a homemade variety show in my living room... And it's just my favorite, favorite, favorite day of the year where friends share talents, from reading poetry to drinking a glass of water, as their talent is hydration. I'm in the afterglow of that. It was just last weekend."

Lower also shared what she did for her "talent," saying that she:

"Set the bar really low at the beginning by playing a song on my ukulele that I have never rehearsed... I allow myself to make a fool of myself... It's just great fun being in the room with other people and sharing. It's lovely."

However, Britt did say that Christmas is her favorite time of the year, if not her favorite day. She added that she and her husband often put up their Christmas tree in November.

Lower revealed why Christmas time was special for her. She elaborated:

"It was always a special holiday growing up, to take a rest from the year... We all work so hard, and it's time to exhale, right before we inhale."

Britt Lower nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series for her role in Severance

During the exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Britt Lower also discussed her nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series. There is a chance that Lower might win a Golden Globe for her role as Helly R./Helena Eagan in season 2 of Severance.

She was sitting next to her Severance co-star Tramell Tillman, Dwayne Johnson, Rhea Seahorn, Kevin Hart, Chase Infiniti, and Monica Padman, at the Golden Globes First-Time Nominee Celebration.

She said:

"It's a huge privilege to be named amongst these incredible artists right next to me... I'm really just savoring it and taking it in."

She was also asked about what she learned about herself while playing her character on Severance, to which she responded:

"I feel like I could answer this probably all day long... I think with any role, when you step into someone else's perspective, you gain empathy for their triumphs and their mistakes... My job as an actress is to really honor their journey, whether they're making the decisions that are best for them or not."

As for the show, this is what Britt Lower had to say:

"... really such an exploration of what it is that makes us human."

She concluded by saying:

"Sometimes our greatest enemies is that inner critic within, and that inner child is fighting to get out... So, I think any character I ever encounter from now on, I will think about those two sides and which one is allowed to have a voice."
