Actresses Betty White and Bea Arthur were known for their roles in The Golden Girls. However, even years after their deaths, stories and behind-the-scenes moments still come about. According to a report by People Magazine from November 11, White and Arthur had been in a feud. The sitcom completed 40 years, and a special edition of the series aired on November 11 in observance of the milestone. It aired in 1985 and ran till 1992. Writers and other members who worked with the show confirmed that the two actresses had bad blood, and once, the situation got out of hand. For instance, a situation developed between Betty White and Bea Arthur while they were filming one of the episodes from the third season of the show. Show writer Barry Fanaro recalled the moment in the special, saying:“It kind of boiled up. We heard yelling backstage. And we all sort of crept out. They were having a fight. It was the only time ever. The next day you could feel the tension in the air a little.”Nonetheless, Fanaro recalled that the two actresses tried to sort things out by clicking unclothed pictures where they pretended to be firemen. He said this helped them break the tension between them.Similarly, film producer Marsha Posner Williams, who worked on the sitcom, said:“I used to get calls at home from Bea complaining about Betty. I got a call from Bea one day, and she said, 'I just ran into that woman at the supermarket. I'm going to write her a letter. I said, 'Bea, do yourself a favor. Please write her a letter, read it out loud, and then throw it away, because you would serve no purpose.”Marsha Posner Williams and Mitch Hurwitz remember Betty White and Bea Arthur’s momentsDespite the differences between Betty White and Bea Arthur, Marsha said that when it was about their commitments on set, they maintained professionalism. Earlier this year, during an event, Williams recalled an incident when Arthur used an expletive for White. She said:“I remember, my husband and I went over to Bea’s house a couple of times for dinner. Within 30 seconds of walking in the door, the c-word came out.”Meanwhile, Mitch Hurwitz said that sometimes, when someone forgot their lines, Betty White would joke with the audience, saying something funny about them being old and forgetful, which made everyone laugh. However, Bea didn’t like it and would ask her to stop because she wanted to stay focused.Mitch said he understood both of them. While Bea was trying to concentrate, Betty was just being her funny, lovable self. In 2011, Betty White spoke about how Bea Arthur thought about her, saying:“Bea had a reserve. She was not that fond of me. She found me a pain in the neck sometimes. It was my positive attitude - and that made Bea mad sometimes. Sometimes if I was happy, she’d be furious!”Bea Arthur died at 86 in 2009, while Betty White suffered a stroke in 2021 and died three weeks before her 100th birthday.
