Al Pacino is said to be reeling after the death of Diane Keaton, the woman friends say was "the love of his life." Following the Hollywood icon's passing on Oct. 11, the legendary actor is reportedly facing his deepest regret: never putting a ring on it.

Keaton and Pacino dated on and off again between 1971 and 1987. The actress also starred as Pacino's girlfriend in The Godfather trilogy. Ultimately, they separated in 1990 as Pacino refused to marry her despite her ultimatum.

Now, after Diane Keaton's passing, friends close to the Scarface actor revealed that he regrets not getting down on one knee to pop her much-awaited question. The source revealed to the Daily Mail:

“I know he will forever regret he didn’t make his move when he had the chance. For years after he and Diane split, Al used to say, ‘If it’s meant to be, it’s never too late for a do-over.’ But sadly, now it is.”

They added:

“Looking back, Al admits the love of his life was Diane, who he’s always called, ‘an amazing woman.'"

The insider further revealed that Diane Keaton and Al Pacino never spoke again, even as they lived near one another in Beverly Hills. When the friend brought it up with Al Pacino, he said:

“I once asked him why, and he told me, ‘There’s no need to talk with each other. We said everything that needed to be said at the time.'"

However, when Diane Keaton received the American Film Institute’s 45th Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, Al Pacino spoke of the actress on stage:

“But I have to say now, dare I say it? Forgive me. You’re an artist, Di. You’re a great artist. I remember it, and I love it. And I love you, forever.”

In a 2021 interview, Keaton answered questions from her fans and friends, one of which was from Al Pacino, who asked:

"Have you ever read Jack Kerouac’s On the Road?"

Keaton responded:

"Okay. You’re insane, number one. And insanely brilliant. Of course, I was in love with you. You couldn’t be more magical and entertaining and unique and all those things wrapped into one. But, no, I’ve never read Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. I don’t really know anything about it."

Through the years after calling it quits, Al Pacino dated a string of glamorous women, such as Lyndall Hobbs, Penelope Ann Miller, and Beverly D'Angelo, among others. Despite this, the insider shared that the most important thing in Al Pacino's life is his children.

"Al adores all his kids. And although he preferred living in New York, he also purchased a home in Los Angeles just so he could spend more time on the West Coast with his children who lived there."
