Marvel’s about to drop a major mic on the mutant world of X-Men, and the perfect director is stepping up. Jake Schreier, the indie‑sensibility auteur behind Thunderbolts, has officially been chosen to direct the MCU’s X‑Men reboot. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Schreier is “doing X‑Men for us, and we’re very, very lucky,” calling him “incredibly smart” and a “talented filmmaker” as the script by Michael Lesslie gets rolling.

The President further praised Schreier and his work and said,

“Jake’s an incredibly smart guy, and he’s an incredibly talented filmmaker. We had a great experience with him on Thunderbolts*. And if you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions, he also has his pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic. He’s younger than me for sure, but he’s tapped into that in a way that I think was important for Thunderbolts*, much more important for X-Men. Because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie.”

After Feige, the Thunderbolts director also opened up about working on the X‑Men film as he told The Playlist,

“Without going into too much—really almost any detail. What I can say is, it’s just inherently interesting and complex material. It’s an incredible opportunity with super interesting characters and [much] internal conflict. These characters are wrestling with their identity and place in the world—that’s inherently interesting and complex material.”

He then added,

“To be able to explore all of the ideas that are inherent to that rich source material, but also at the scale inherent to the source material, that’s like a very rare and fortunate opportunity. That’s very exciting.”

Marvel is recasting the X‑Men with a fresh generation, focusing on teenage and young adult mutants to reflect comic‑accurate origins and allow room for long‑term growth. Existing Fox‑era mutants like Logan, Professor X, and Magneto will appear in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, but aren’t expected to continue in the reboot.

Reported timelines suggest production begins in 2026, with a likely theatrical release around December 2028, possibly the untitled MCU slot already rumored for that year. Screenwriter Michael Lesslie, who has worked on The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, is penning the script in collaboration with Feige.

Why Schreier? Thunderbolts delivered sharp character dynamics, unexpected emotional depth, and ensemble magic—the very DNA of what makes the X‑Men tick. With Phase 6 reshaping the MCU post‑Secret Wars, this project marks the official return of mutants and the beginning of a high‑stakes, youth‑focused chapter in the Marvel saga.

Strap in: X‑Men is slated for development after Avengers: Secret Wars, with production possibly starting mid‑2026 and a projected release sometime in 2027 or later.
