New details are emerging about the shocking demise of celebrity chef Anne Burrell.
TMZ has reported that Burrell's spouse, Stuart Claxton, discovered his wife's "unconscious" body on the floor of their bathroom early on Tuesday, June 17. He last saw her alive at 1 am., and about six to sevaen hours later, he was ringing 911 for help, at around 7:50 am.
Page Six has reported that he was immediately urged to start performing CPR on his wife. However, her body was reportedly cold by that time, and it currently remains unclear if he executed the life-saving tactic.
Anne Burrell, known for her contribution to the Food Network, died at the age of 55. A representative for the New York City Fire Department recently told Page Six that Claxton told 911 that Burrell went into "cardiac arrest" and was “DOA [dead on arrival].”
However, as of this writing, the official cause of death remains unclear. The New York Post has reported that the Office of Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to rule this out.
Anne Burrell's life and legacy explored as new details about her demise emerge
Anne Burrell's family confirmed her demise in a statement to Us Weekly:
“Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered. Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”
Ahead of her passing, she was spotted having “a blast” at the finale of an improv course she had been taking at The Second City New York in Brooklyn. A representative for the venue told Page Six in a statement on Wednesday:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and student, Anne Burrell. She will be missed and remembered as a vibrant part of our Second City New York Training Center community. Anne brought joy, boldness, and an unwavering ‘yes, and’ spirit. Her enthusiasm was contagious, her presence unforgettable. Our thoughts go out to Anne’s family and loved ones.”
The Food Network has also issued a statement expressing their grief at the loss of talent.
“Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent — teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring,” a representative for the network told The Post. “Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss,” they concluded.
Anne Burrell was known for her cooking show appearances, including Iron Chef America, Chef Wanted, and Chopped. She also earned an Emmy nomination for her show, Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, which ran for nine seasons.
Rachael Ray, her friend and bridesmaid at her wedding, stated that she is “truly shaken” to learn of Anne Burrell's passing.
“I can’t quite believe it — such a strong, vibrant, fearless woman, so full of life and love, could be gone so soon,” the 56-year-old wrote on Instagram. “Anne was a rockstar! I came to know her well through multiple seasons of Worst Cooks on Food Network, and she became so much more than a colleague.” She added: “I’ll miss her friendship deeply. Everyone whose life she touched will miss her. Sending love to Stuart and everyone who knew and loved Anne. We’ve lost someone truly special.”
Kardea Brown echoed similar sentiments as she took to Instagram on Tuesday to note:
“In utter disbelief right now 😢 They say things you do for yourself will be gone when you’re gone … but things you do for others will remain as your legacy forever.” She continued, “@chefanneburrell you left us with so much … thank you for your contributions to the culinary world and the lives you touched with your infectious personality. Forever in our hearts💔.”
Anne Burrell leaves behind her mother, Marlene, her sister, Jane, and her husband, whom she got hitched to in October 2021. She also has a stepson, Javier.
Days ahead of her demise, she took to Instagram to share what would be her final post, where she could be seen striking a pose alongside the Elizabeth Eaton Rosenthal fixture in NYC:
“I ran into @greenladyofbrooklyn in my neighborhood today!! I’m not going to lie- I have been keeping an eye out for her. I may or may not have followed her down the street for a minute. She is just lovely!!!” she captioned the post.
