Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for Highest 2 Lowest, a tense thriller that reunites Denzel Washington with director Spike Lee for the first time in nearly two decades. Co-produced by A24, the film is a bold reimagining of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low, set against the slick, cutthroat world of the modern music industry.
Washington stars as David King, a legendary music executive whose world is turned upside down when his driver's son is kidnapped in a case of mistaken identity. As the crisis unfolds, King finds himself confronting the boundaries of his influence and personal accountability. The cast also features A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, and introduces Ice Spice in her first on-screen role.
Highest 2 Lowest premiered at Cannes in May 2025 to early buzz and critical acclaim. It will hit theaters on August 15 before streaming globally on Apple TV+ starting September 5. Highest 2 Lowest began taking shape before the COVID-19 pandemic, when director Spike Lee received the original script by Alan Fox. After Denzel Washington signed on to star, Lee joined in rewriting the screenplay, transforming it into a modern reimagining of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low. The story shifts from corporate Japan to the high-stakes world of New York's music industry, with Washington playing a powerful music mogul whose life is upended when his chauffeur's child is mistakenly kidnapped.
Talking about the film, Lee told Deadline,
“In Kurosawa’s film, Toshiro Mifune is a shoemaker. In our film Denzel Washington is a music mogul with his own label and his reputation as the best ears in the business. So, this is the fifth film with the dynamic duo.”
The film was officially announced in February 2024, with A24 producing alongside Todd Black for Escape Artists and Jason Michael Berman for Mandalay Pictures. Lee directs and executive produces under his 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks banner, marking his fifth collaboration with Washington and their first since Inside Man. In addition to his acting role, A$AP Rocky also lends his musical talent to the film’s soundtrack.
