Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena shared a long relationship that combined both their personal and professional lives. Their journey lasted nearly 14 years and included marriage, film projects, and life together away from the spotlight.
The couple often kept their private life low-key, but their work together in film gave some insight into their bond. Aubrey Plaza acted in Baena’s projects, and she also worked as a producer on some of his films. Their shared career path showed the trust and respect they had built over the years.
After Baena’s death in January 2025, Aubrey Plaza chose silence for months but finally opened up in August about her grief and how she was living with it.
Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena's relationship timeline

Plaza and Baena started dating in 2011. They did not share much about their early relationship, preferring to stay private. During this time, they also began to explore working together.
In 2014, Plaza was in Life After Beth, directed by Baena. Plaza collaborated with Baena over the years on such movies as The Little Hours (2017) and, more recently, Spin Me Round (2022). Plaza told People in 2019:
"I think that when you’re with someone that is in your field, they understand what you’re dealing with on a deeper level.”
In 2021, Plaza revealed in an Instagram post that she had been secretly married to Baena. She called him her husband, verifying what many had long assumed. This was a personal milestone for them, marking ten years in their relationship.
Separation and loss

The couple was separated by September 2024. This was not made public then. Records have since reported that the two were already separated when Baena died.
Baena committed suicide at the age of 47 on January 3, 2025.
In August 2025, Plaza addressed the audience on the issues of grief. She opened up about her grief on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang, recently.
She said, “Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning. I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think I’m OK, but it’s like a daily struggle, obviously.”
She described her grief as a "giant ocean of awfulness."
