Aubrey Plaza’s husband, Jeff Baena, tragically passed away on January 3 in what can only be described as an unfathomable tragedy. In the wake of her husband’s passing, Plaza has remained relatively quiet and refrained from making many public appearances until she stepped out for the Cannes Film Festival to promote her upcoming film.
In her first red carpet event since her loss, Plaza partook in the Cannes premiere of her upcoming film Honey Don’t!. In tow were her co-stars, Margaret Qualley and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia alum Charlie Day.
Also joining the film's stars on the red carpet were Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, who co-wrote the screenplay. Coen is also directing the film while Cooke is pulling double duty as a producer as well. Plaza sported a demure look, in a nod to subtle glam, although she still managed to stun onlookers at the event.

Aubrey Plaza’s late husband, Jeff Baena, Honey Don’t!
For some additional context, Plaza and her husband, Jeff, began dating in 2011. The private couple kept their personal lives largely under wraps until March 2021, when Plaza referred to Baena as her “darling husband” in an Instagram post, and it became official to the masses.
Once the news was out, she began to speak lovingly of her man in interviews and other public appearances, sharing anecdotes of the pair and finally choosing to provide her fans with a glimpse into their lives.
Plaza’s upcoming Honey Don’t! is being billed as a queer, black comedy about “Small-town private investigator Honey O'Donahue probes a series of strange deaths that are tied to a mysterious church” as per it’s official synopsis.
It’s poised to be a wild romp of a film, and the cast seems genuinely excited to share it with audiences. If the response at Cannes is any indication, moviegoers are likely to have a great time with this one, as it premiered to a six-minute standing ovation by a raucous crowd. The movie will open in U.S. theaters on August 22.
Aubrey’s next two film projects are slated to be animated features. Animal Friends is the first of these projects and is a live-action animated road film directed by Peter Atencio. Next up is The Ark and the Aardvark, an animated adventure comedy film directed by John Stevenson, which has been in production since 2014 and is finally set to release.
