Quentin Tarantino, who recently appeared on The Bret Easton Ellis podcast, opened up about the lower half of his top-ranked films in a discussion with the host. According to Variety, Tarantino also commented on one of his beloved films, Battle Royale, which he listed at the number eleventh spot, saying that the plot of The Hunger Games is very similar to the popular Japanese film. He said:

“I do not understand how the Japanese writer didn’t sue Suzanne Collins for every fucking thing she owns. They just ripped off the fucking book! Stupid book critics are not going to go watch a Japanese movie called ‘Battle Royale,’ so the stupid book critics never called her out on it. They talked about how it was the most original thing they’d ever fucking read. As soon as the film critics saw the film they said, ‘What the fuck! This is just “Battle Royale” except PG!'”

Quentin Tarantino is currently gearing up for the release of the highly anticipated The Whole Bloody Affair, a more than four-hour-long film that combines Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2 into one single movie, set to release next month on December 5. According to Tribune, the previously written plot from the unfilmed story titled The Lost Chapter: Yuki's Revenge is going to be released later this month, on November 30, in collaboration with Epic Games.

More from Quentin Tarantino's interview, as the Oscar-nominated director lists the bottom half of his top-rated films

In his recent appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis podcast on Wednesday, November 26, Quentin Tarantino explained the lower half of his top twenty films. According to World of Reel, Tarantino listed the 2013 film Big Bad Wolves, directed by Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, as the twelfth film on his list. Talking about the film, he said:

“This has got a fantastic script and a similar storyline to Prisoners […] they handle it with guts and balls — you know the American movie wouldn’t do that."

In the thirteenth spot, Quentin Tarantino listed "Jackass: The Movie" as another of his favourite films. Talking about what exactly he loves about the movie, the BAFTA-winning director said:

"This was the movie I laughed at the most in these last 20 years. I don’t remember laughing from beginning to end like this since Richard Pryor […] As I was making Kill Bill, I thought this movie was so f*cking funny I had to show it to the crew. So we found a print, watched the movie, and just died."

Quentin Tarantino further explained that the 2003 movie The School of Rock is the fourteenth movie on his list, adding, "It was a really fun time at the theaters." The next movie, in the fifteenth spot, is the 2004 film The Passion of Christ, directed by Mel Gibson.

This is followed by the 2005 film The Devil's Rejects, directed by Rob Zombie, which is then followed by the 2008 Thai martial arts film "Chocolate." In the eighteenth spot, Quentin Tarantino listed Moneyball, particularly praising Brad Pitt's performance in the movie. During his conversation on the podcast, Tarantino said:

"Brad Pitt’s performance was one of my favorite star performances of the last 20 years — where a movie star came in and reminded you why he was a movie star and just carried the movie on his shoulders."

The second-last spot is occupied by the 2002 film Cabin Fever, directed by Eli Roth, and the twentieth film on the list is none other than the 2021 Oscar-nominated film West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg. Tarantino particularly praised Spielberg's directing style in the film, saying,

"This is the one where Steven shows he still has it."
