Michelle Williams recently recalled the infamous Best Picture mixup at the 2017 Oscars, which culminated in Busy Philipps coaxing Ben Affleck into saving the day.
During her recent chat with her longtime friend, actress Michelle Williams, on QVC+ HSN+, the Girls5eva star recalled one of the most chaotic moments at the Oscars:
“It’s just hours and hours and you’ve barely had anything to drink, and you have nothing to eat. You're just out of it. You’re there, just witnessing it, the chaos,” Philipps said of the moment Warren Beatty incorrectly announced La La Land as the winner instead of Moonlight. “Which also makes sense that he said the wrong thing,” she added. “This crazy thing happens. We knew because we were right there in the front row,” she said.
At the time, Busy Philipps was seated right alongside Michelle Williams and Ben Affleck, all of whom were naturally confused amid the chaos. Williams then recalled how Philipps turned to Affleck and called on him to save the day:
"You turned to him and said, ‘Do something! Do something!’” Williams quipped, “because he was Batman.” “And you expected he was going to save the day,” she added. "He was just as shocked as the rest of us."

During the segment, Busy Philipps, 45, concurred, as she recalled the aftermath of the situation:
“That’s right. I don’t know Ben Affleck — I just was like, ‘He’s Batman, he’s a movie star, he can go onstage and handle it!’” She joked, “He could not."
Ben Affleck embodied the role of Batman in several films, including 2017's Justice League.
"He was literally looking back at Matt Damon," Philipps said of Affleck's close friend, "who was sitting right behind his brother [Casey Affleck], who was, like, two doors down from you. And I don't know Ben Affleck. I just was like, 'He's Batman. He's a movie star. He can go onstage and handle it.' He could not. It turns out, it was very difficult to handle."
As reported by The News, back in 2017, shortly after the Oscars mayhem, Busy Philipps took to her Instagram Stories to recount her version of what happened backstage:
“La La Land got up there, all of a sudden this stage manager or somebody who worked there with a microphone crouched in front of Casey [Affleck] and started whispering into his microphone really urgently and saying, ‘It’s a mistake! Moonlight is supposed to be Best Picture. It’s a mistake! It’s a mistake! Moonlight is Best Picture!’” “We all heard it right there — like right in the front,” she added. “Nobody else heard it.”
Back in 2017, during the mishap, La La Land producers had already taken to the stage to deliver their acceptance speech when it was announced that there had been a mistake.
