Starfighter, also known as Star Wars: Starfighter, is an upcoming film in the space opera genre. Shawn Levy directs it, while Jonathan Tropper is the writer. The film's storyline will take place five years post the events of 2019's Rise of the Skywalker. Walt Disney Studios will be releasing it on May 28, 2027.

Recently, Levy revealed that the film is inspired by George Lucas's 1983 flick Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. He said,

"It’s Jedi because of the combination of theme, levity, adventure, heart, and spectacle."

Let's take a look at what exactly Levy said about his forthcoming film.

Shawn Levy says Starfighter is inspired by Return of the Jedi

Shawn Levy recently appeared on "On Film… With Kevin McCarthy" and revealed that Starfighter is inspired by the original trilogy, mainly Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. He said,

“It’s Jedi because of the combination of theme, levity, adventure, heart, and spectacle… I saw that movie so many times in a theater… There are moments on set where I feel like that kid is with me in the director’s chair.”

Recently, Levy also revealed that the film's score will be composed by Academy Award nominee Thomas Newman. He said,

“I know, bro. I don’t know if that’s public, so now it is. Yeah, I think we’re breaking news here. You don’t understand. If you ask me to name my favorite scores, five of the top 10 are Tom Newman: Shawshank, Road to Perdition, Nemo, American Beauty. The guy is a maestro."

Starfighter is produced by Levy and Kathleen Kennedy under the banners of Lucasfilm and 21 Laps Entertainment. Its cast members include Ryan Reynolds, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Amy Adams, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.

It will be a standalone film outside of the previous Skywalker Saga. The franchise started in 1977, created by George Lucas. The film was an enormous critical and commercial success and was followed by The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. In retrospect, they are considered part of the original trilogy. Lucas then directed the prequel trilogy, which included The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.

The final trilogy in the franchise so far has been the Skywalker saga that ran from 2015 to 2019.
