Being Heumann: Everything we know so far

Apple TV+ has recently announced its upcoming film called Being Heumann. The film is directed by Sian Heder, who earlier wrote and directed the 2021 Academy Award-winning coming-of-age film CODA. The film will star Ruth Madeley in the lead role of Judy Heumann, who was a disability rights activist.

The BAFTA-nominated performer will be playing the role of Heumann, who led a 28-day-long protest involving several disabled people into the Federal Building in San Francisco. Their massive protest led the authorities to create section 504 which is the Rehabilitation Act. This act made it mandatory for all federal buildings and places to be accessible to disabled people. She is often regarded as “the Mother of the Disability Rights Movement" in the United States. At the age of 75, Heumann passed away on March 4, 2023.

The film is an official adaptation of Heumann's namesake autobiographical book. The script is written by Heder and Rebekah Taussig. It is being produced by Heder, Kevin Walsh, and David Permut under the production banner of The Walsh Company. Kevin Cleary and John W. Beach are also the producers for Gravity Squared Entertainment. The executive producers of the film include Diana Pokorny, Kristen Joiner, and the late Heumann herself.

In an official statement, Ruth Madeley spoke about playing the role of Heumann and said:

“What an unbelievable honor to play The Mother of disability rights, an icon and powerhouse to the disabled community. Judy has always been a source of inspiration for me personally, and I am so excited to share her story with the world."

The makers are yet to reveal more cast member names as well as its release date.
