Ray J, a television personality and R&B musician, has been vocal in his opposition to long-standing conspiracy theories that have connected him to the passing of Whitney Houston, the legendary pop icon. Ray J discussed the suspicions that have followed him since Houston's death in 2012 in an open interview with Cam Newton's Funky Friday podcast, which was published on July 25. He called the claims "hurtful" and "super disrespectful."
Speaking to Newton, he said that the claims were:
"Biggest cap I've ever heard."
"I wasn't even there" Ray J insists
Right before Whitney Houston's death, Ray J, whose real name is Willie Norwood Jr., was romantically involved with her. The official cause of Houston's death, which occurred on February 11, 2012, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, was accidental drowning brought on by heart disease and cocaine addiction.
Multiple claims were made back then that Ray J was involved, which Ray J again denied on the podcast, saying that he was not responsible for her death, either by being at the hotel with her or supplying her with drugs.
Talking about it on Cam Newton's Funky Friday podcast, he finally revealed:
“To make me that person when I wasn’t even there [when she died], and then to put ‘murderer’ on top of that [is too much].”
He also added:
“I’ve never done one drug with Whitney.”
Ray J gave an explanation for his extended silence on the matter, stating that he was respectful of Houston and her family and decided not to defend himself. He said:
“When you know the truth, why do you have to jump out there and try to tell it to everyone.”
However, he felt obliged to stand up when accusations began to circulate on social media. He stated:
“It’s so distasteful for somebody to tell somebody [else] something that the other person can’t respond to. To me, it’s unfair. But now that the sh-t’s going everywhere, it’s just hurtful.”
Suge Knight's claims and past allegations
This wasn't the first time that Ray J has had to confront the murder accusations. Back in February, Suge Knight claimed that Ray J was involved in Whitney Houston's death. He revealed this in an interview, The Art Of Dialogue, from prison via phone. He claimed that Whitney said:
“She just used the term that ‘Brandy’s little brother bringing me drugs and doing drugs with me. Brandy’s little brother trying to kiss me and do drugs with me.’ Next thing you know, she’s dead.”
Ray J has been dealing with allegations since Whitney's death, multiple allegations this year itself. He had recently replied to a clip shared by content creator Emilie Hagen, which featured DONATPOV, who theorized that he had played a role in Whitney's death in a now-deleted Instagram post.
He stated:
"WTF? See this is exactly what I'm talking about!!! THIS DUDE ON THIS INTERVIEW QUICK TO TEAR DOWN ANOTHER BLACK MAN AND TALK ABOUT SH*T HE DON'T KNOW NOTHIN ABOUT AND THEN BRING UP WHITNEY? AS IF I HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT?? Wait WHAT??"
He addressed this incident in an interview with Moniece Slaughter on Twitch in June. The R&B singer said:
“Like the Black vloggers and sh*t talking about it then they pull up the Whitney sh*t and try to put me walking out of the hotel, as if I could get in there. I wasn’t even in there. So, it’s like what are y’all talking about?”
He added:
“I gotta literally come out and explain what it really was, which is super disrespectful to Whitney, but now it’s getting out of control. Now it’s like fam, I was not there. I just ain’t never spoke on it out of respect, but it’s not okay. Like a ni**a wasn’t even there bro.”
In October last year, he called out Jaguar Wright in an interview with The Reality Check for making theories, stating:
"First off, I want to say Whitney Houston was a very special person in my life. She has a very special place in my heart. [...] I'm not going to talk s**t about you, Jaguar. But when you are creating these stories and pushing narratives with no real basis, it's clear that you're doing some kind of attention-chasing or you're doing this s**t for clout. Or just for negative destruction, right? Is that about seeking the truth? You want to stir up the pot for your own gain?"
Despite the multiple accusations, Ray J has stated that Whitney Houston has a "very special place" in his heart. As of now, Houston Estate has yet to respond to the singer's comments.
