News about the Boston University women's soccer program keeps going from bad to worse. The Boston Globe published an article on June 25 alleging that former assistant coach Casey Brown is facing sexual harassment charges.
The charges were brought forward by the university's current midfielder, Shayla Brown, who contacted the university’s confidential ethics hotline about Casey Brown’s behavior on September 14, 2024. Shayla took further steps to solidify her claim, including sharing details with the team’s sports psychologist:
"The coach, she said, was acting inappropriately toward one of BU’s key players, focusing excessively on her and trying to manipulate her in ways that were distressing to the player and her teammates."
The Boston Globe article continued:
"This was not a case of a coach coddling a prized player, Shayla Brown said. Her teammate was 'being groomed,' she told the psychologist."
Boston University women’s soccer program harassment claims
Shockingly, per The Boston Globe, Shayla Brown and 17 other Boston University women’s soccer players reported similar claims to BU’s Equal Opportunity Office the next day. They were resolute in their stance, noting that the teammate they were defending had also shared her experience with school officials to no avail. The anonymous player remains on the team and recently shared with the press outlet that her coach preyed on her for over two years in ways that felt wrong:
"She recalled navigating a stream of awkward texts, unsettling invitations and unwanted attention."
Representatives from People Magazine and other outlets have reached out to both Brown and Boston University for comment, but there has been no response as yet.
Casey Brown, the former player turned coach of the Boston University soccer team, currently under investigation, officially resigned in December, after first being placed on midseason leave. The university was careful to absolve itself of any backlash in its official statement:
"At the conclusion of the investigation, there were no BU policy violations and no evidence of sexual harassment."
Boston University’s reps stated to The Globe:
"Nevertheless, BU and Brown parted ways, and Brown is no longer the head coach."
Shayla Brown’s disturbing claims follow Call Her Daddy podcast host Alex Cooper’s comments on her time spent on the team during her playing days. She levied allegations of sexual harassment toward her former coach, Nancy Feldman, in her Hulu docuseries, Call Her Alex.
Cooper also made the claim that she pleaded to assistant coach Casey Brown for help, but felt that her pleas for help were rebuked. Unfortunately, it seems as though history is repeating itself.
