New character posters for Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein put the stars front and center: Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as The Creature, Mia Goth as Elizabeth Harlander, Christoph Waltz as Heinrich Harlander, and Felix Kammerer as William Frankenstein. The striking images, released by Netflix this week, give a first tease of the film’s gothic grandeur and the actors’ transformative looks.

Del Toro’s adaptation, produced in partnership with Netflix, is slated for a limited theatrical run before streaming, positioning these posters as the opening notes of a much-anticipated comeback for the classic tale. The director has maintained a long-standing connection to the project, frequently expressing his desire to create a film adaptation of Mary Shelley’s legendary novel, widely regarded as one of the most iconic works of English science fiction.

Speaking during Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event, del Toro spoke about the film and his passion for it and said,

“This has been, for me, the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life. I first read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a kid and saw [star of the 1931 adaptation] Boris Karloff in, what became for me, an almost religious state. Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son has consumed my stories again and again. I wanted to make this film before even I had a camera, and I’ve been actively pursuing it now for 25 years.”

Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein reimagines Mary Shelley’s gothic classic through the lens of grief, faith, and human fragility. Written and directed by Del Toro, the film stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the Creature, Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza, Felix Kammerer as William Frankenstein, Christoph Waltz as Heinrich Harlander, Lars Mikkelsen as Captain Anderson, David Bradley as the Blind Man, and Charles Dance as the domineering patriarch Leopold Frankenstein. The film premiered in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 30, 2025, before hitting theaters this October and becoming available for global streaming on Netflix starting in November.

Set against the sweeping melancholy of 19th-century Europe, Frankenstein follows an ambitious scientist who brings life to the dead, only to be consumed by the consequences of his own obsession. Del Toro’s vision, first teased as far back as 2007, was long delayed by studio shifts and his own hesitation to tackle what he called “the pinnacle of everything.” After multiple iterations at Universal, the project finally found its footing under Netflix’s creative umbrella in 2023, following Del Toro’s Oscar win for Pinocchio.

Frankenstein will be in theaters on October 17, 2025, and will be streaming on Netflix from November 7.
