Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone's Bugonia has dropped a new clip that gives fans another glimpse at the black comedy. Stone's fourth collaboration with the doctor, the film follows her as Michelle Fuller, the CEO of a major pharmaceutical company, who gets kidnapped because two conspiracy theorists believe she's an alien.
The clip shared gives fans a sneak-peek into the aftermath of the kidnapping. Stone's Michelle is seen passed out on the bed, as Teddy Gatz and Aidan Delbis, the theorists examine parts of her body, her nails, her hair, commenting on each part.
Comments have flown in soon after, as fans have praised Stone's acting, who won an Academy Award last year for Lanthimos' film Poor Things. Looking at the duo's past collaborations, Bugonia will also be a worthwhile watch.
The film is loosely inspired by the 2003 Korean film directed by Kang Joon-Kwan, with a fresh take by screenwriter Will Tracy.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter about being blown away by Tracy's script, Lanthimos told the outlet,
“I was immediately blown away. “I felt it was so funny and entertaining but also extremely impactful and made you really think about things deeply. I immediately was interested in making it. It felt relevant then, three years ago, and even more relevant now, unfortunately.”
More details about Bugonia
Bugonia is a co-production between Ireland, South Korea, and the United States, starring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone, and tells the story of two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap a high-powered CEO, convinced she’s an alien plotting to annihilate Earth.
The film’s title, Bugonia, draws from an ancient Greek myth, bougonia, the ritual belief that bees could spontaneously emerge from the carcasses of dead oxen. It’s a fitting metaphor for Lanthimos’ brand of storytelling, where decay breeds creation and absurdity masks revelation.
The film's development traces back to 2020, when Jang was initially attached to direct his own remake with Tracy penning the script. Producer Ari Aster soon joined, championing a gender swap for the protagonist. In February 2024, Lanthimos replaced Jang, marking his fourth collaboration with Stone after The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness. Focus Features acquired global distribution rights during the Cannes Film Festival that May, following Plemons’ casting.
The score, composed by Jerskin Fendrix and performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra, came together with Fendrix being given only four words to work from.
Bugonia premiered in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2025, and will be released in U.S. theaters by Focus Features this October. It’s absurd, poetic, and unsettling, an alien abduction story that’s less about other worlds than the terrifying logic of our own.
Bugonia will be in theaters on October 24, 2025.
