"It is with immense sadness that we have to announce the passing of Richard Darbyshire, founder member and lead singer with Living in A Box from 1987 - 1990. Richard was an incredible talent - what a voice! His vocal skills knew no bounds, from the driving raw power of our first, eponymous hit song, to the tender heart-melting charm of Room in Your Heart, Richard, truly, could do it all."

The band also mentioned that Richard was "happiest in the studio" with a "guitar in hand."

British pop band Living in a Box gained recognition for their self-titled single, Living in A Box which was released in 1987. The track reached No. 5 in the UK and also charted in the U.S.

Marcus Vere and Anthony Critchlow were recording the demo version of the track in the studio, when Richard Darbyshire visited them as an independent artist. He was invited to join the band to record vocals, and the three soon became a band.

The band split up in 1990 due to artistic differences and a switch at their record label, Chrysalis. Post the split, Richard continued to perform and wrote songs for artists including Lisa Stansfield, Jennifer Rush and Level 42. He released a solo album in 1994 titled How Many Angels.

Other band members Anthony and Marcus temporarily retired from the music industry after the band's split. Anthony went on to run his own company providing bespoke illumination and lighting installations.

Vere made a comeback and produced an award-winning series of educational DVDs called Here Comes A....! for pre-school children. In 2016, he received songwriting credits on ABC's album Lexicon of Love II.

In 2016, the band made a comeback with British soul singer Kenny Thomas replacing Richard Darbyshire. The band made appearances at several UK festivals including Let's Rock, Rewind and Flashback.
