Burn Boston Burn is a 2023 non-fiction book by former ATF special agent Wayne M. Miller. Dark Castle Entertainment has bought its rights and will be adapting it into a feature-length film as well as a documentary. The studio has teamed up with Compelling Pictures for these projects.

The book chronicles what is touted as the largest investigation of an arson case in United States history. The investigation was followed by a major manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators. Let us explore all the available details about this forthcoming film/documentary, as well as the case it’s based on.

Burn Boston Burn to be adapted into a film and documentary

Burn Boston Burn is being adapted for the screen by Dark Castle Entertainment and Compelling Pictures. They will be producing both a documentary and a feature-length film. The case takes place in the early 1980s, when large layoffs occurred in the Boston police and fire departments due to tax cuts.

Nine men, including three cops, then planned to set fire to different locations in the city. They continued torching 264 buildings over the next two years. This launched a manhunt headed by Wayne M. Miller, who is also the author of Burn Boston Burn: The Largest Arson Case in the History of the Country.

The script will be written by Michael McGrale, who is also serving as executive producer alongside Wayne Miller and Steven Garcia. Both the film and documentary will be produced by Norman Golightly, Robert Bell, Denis O’Sullivan, and Jeff Kalligheri.

In a statement, Golightly said:

“We’re thrilled to partner with Compelling, Mike McGrale and Wayne Miller on this incredible true story. Wayne’s book has all the propulsion of classic crime thrillers like The Town and Heat, while exploring a time in American history that feels more relevant now than ever.”

O’Sullivan added,

“We could not be more excited to be a part of this wildly unpredictable, harrowing true-crime thriller both as a feature and documentary. It’s long been a dream to find something that could take us back to the visceral thrill of watching Ron Howard’s Backdraft for the first time, and to be able to do so alongside Wayne (who harkens back to The Untouchables‘ Eliot Ness in his drive and determination), Dark Castle, and our dear friend Mike McGrale, is beyond a gift to us and the worldwide audience.”

The makers haven’t revealed the casting for Burn Boston Burn.
