Netflix's People We Meet on Vacation is all set to premiere on the platform in a few months, and the first look at the book-to-screen adaptation is already winning fans over. Based on Emily Henry's bestselling book, the story explores a slow-burn romance between two friends who reunite every summer vacation. Romance creeps in soon, even as they deny it, and from everything we have seen in the first trailer, it's clear that it's going to be a romantic ride.

The film is being directed by Brett Haley, who has previously worked on the film adaptation of All The Bright Places. With the first look out, Haley opened up about the film in an interview with Netflix, sharing his thoughts on what the film is about and what he thinks about the lead cast.

Emily Bader is playing Poppy Wright, who has already earned the seal of approval from the director. Comparing her to the likes of Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan, Haley told the outlet,

“She wears her emotions so openly, and Emily Bader captures all of that so fully. Her comedic timing is razor sharp, but she also has the range to land dramatic and romantic moments with real depth. She’ll make you laugh, and she’ll make you cry.”

Tom Blyth is playing Alex Nilsen alongside, who Haley thinks is "effortlessly cool." Speaking of him, the director says,

“Tom Blyth, who in real life is effortlessly cool, really leaned into Alex’s logic and restraint in a way that made the character feel incredibly real and relatable. He brought so much life, warmth, and quiet humor to the role.”

The author too, praised the couples chemistry as she told the outlet about watching their chemistry read multiple times and loving it every single time. With just a few months to go for the film to hit Netflix, here's everything you need to know about People We Meet on Vacation.

When Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen first crossed paths, no one would have guessed they’d spend the next decade circling each other through summers, trips, and long-distance friendships. But that's exactly the premise the film is going for, and yes, we are already hooked.

The filmmakers leaned into People We Meet on Vacation's sense of travel-as-romance. Haley has joked that this is “the James Bond of rom-coms” thanks to its wide scope of destinations, from New Orleans to a sun-soaked wedding in Barcelona. Blyth admits that filming was a dream: “The clue is in the name,” he said. “It’s People we meet on vacation, and we really got to do that tenfold.”

Published in 2021, Henry’s novel became a number-one New York Times bestseller and sold over two million copies in the U.S. The film marks her first adaptation, and Haley promises to stay true to the heart of the story: a love that grows quietly, over years, vacations, and the courage to finally admit it.

People We Meet on Vacation premieres January 9, 2026, only on Netflix.
