The internet reacted to Matthew Livelsberger, accused of exploding a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel on January 1, 2025, for reportedly using generative artificial intelligence that included ChatGPT in his planning.

Matthew Livelsberger, a 37-year-old decorated Army Green Beret soldier and Colorado resident, reportedly used generative artificial intelligence, including ChatGPT. According to an analysis of his searches, he was trying to find out about explosive targets, the velocity of certain rounds of ammunition, and whether or not Arizona permitted the use of fireworks.

This quickly had the internet reacting, with one user commenting:

To which other users chimed in:

Ai comin for us already-commented one user

Another user expressed concern by commenting

Man who exploded a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump hotel in Las Vegas used generative AI to help plan it. Really where we are going with AI

A user also joked about Tesla's durable design

Greatest marketing ever for Tesla Cybertruck. It just showed the world how it’s built like a tank. If it happened with a different truck, the explosion would’ve been bigger and the casualties would’ve been a lot more

Another expressed concern once again, by commenting:

With multiple sources, including CNN and The Globe and Mail, confirming this information, it's clear that law enforcement agencies must take a closer look at how AI technology is being used and potentially misused by individuals with malicious intentions.

Highlighting the potential misuse of generative artificial intelligence and also urging authorities to recognize and address such potential risks in the future.

The internet had mixed reactions to the incident, some users expressed concerns about AI misuse and its potential effects, while another joked about the Tesla Cybertruck's durability and referred to it as "the greatest marketing ever". Others however urged authorities to recognise and address such potential risks in the future.

More about the Tesla Cybertruck explosion

According to the authorities, Liversberg pulled over on his way to Las Vegas to fill up the Tesla Cybertruck with racing gradefuel, which leaked while he was on his way. After the 37-year-old shot himself up, the firearm flash must have caused the car to explode which contained 60 pounds (27 kilograms) of pyrotechnic material.

The Green Beret who served in Afghanistan as well, described the explosion as a 'wakeup call' for the nation. His notes from his phone revealed that he was battling with survivor's guilt about his fellow soldiers.

In his letters, Liversberg talked about the social difficulties, political complaints, and international concerns like the Ukraine conflict and claimed that the United States was 'terminally ill and headed towards collapse'.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's sheriff Kevin McMahill, in his response to the Associated Press, described the use of generative AI as a "game-changer" and stated that the department was exchanging data with other law enforcement organizations.

He went on to further say,

This is the first incident that I'm aware of on U.S. soil where ChatGPT is utilised to help an individual build a particular device.

He also stated

It's a concerning moment.

In response to this Open AI issued a statement saying:

In this case, ChatGPT responded with information already publicly available on the internet and provided warnings against harmful or illegal activities. We’re working with law enforcement to support their investigation.

Open AI assured its commitment to ensuring the safe and responsible use of its tool and stated that the AI is designed to reject harmful instructions.

The explosion did not cause much significant damage to the Trump Hotel but it did injure seven people. The 37-year-old, Green Beret, had planned a more destructive attack but the blast was absorbed by the Tesla Cybertruck's steel walls, according to Sheriff McMahill.

From the use of a Tesla Cybertruck and the site of the explosion bearing the name of the President-elect, the authorities are trying to investigate if this planning by Liversberg was intended to make some sort of a political statement.

Liversberg had no animosity towards President-elect Donald Trump as according to his notes, he mentioned that the country needed to "rally around" Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
