Joanna Gaines carved out a name for herself in the world of home design long before streaming platforms made renovation shows a binge-worthy staple. She and husband Chip Gaines found national fame on HGTV’s Fixer Upper, where their charm and modern aesthetic struck a chord with millions.

Since those early days, Chip and Joanna Gaines expanded their reach well beyond home makeovers, delving into publishing, lifestyle branding, and even launching a full-blown television network. And all that hard work paid off.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Joanna Gaines and Chip are estimated to be worth $50 million, a figure largely attributed to their work on Fixer Upper and the booming Magnolia brand they built.

Long before they were TV royalty or lifestyle moguls, Chip and Joanna Gaines were just trying to get by. In a 2020 interview with People magazine, Joanna painted a raw picture of their early financial struggles.

“I remember when we first got married the only money we had was what was in Chip’s pocket, he always had a wad of cash, but we were broke. If I needed to go grocery shopping it’s whatever was in his pocket. That’s how we paid the bills,” she shared.

Chip, who had started flipping houses while still in college, wasn’t exactly making bank in those early days. And when he married Joanna in 2003, her parents weren’t quite convinced his passion was a solid career.

“Her dad spent the first two years of our marriage asking me if I was going to get a job,” Chip joked.
“I was like, ‘I have a job and I like it,’” he added.

These days, their success speaks for itself. But even now, the couple remains surprised by how far they’ve come.

“All of this sort of fell into our laps, we were just living our life out here in little bitty Waco. We had dreams and aspirations like most folks, but this has really been something else,” Chip admitted.

Chip Gaines hadn’t planned on becoming a real estate mogul. At first, flipping homes was just something he tried on the side, until one deal of $30,000 opened his eyes to a much bigger opportunity.

“When I flipped that first house, and I basically made on that first flip about what I made in the previous year in the lawn maintenance business, it kind of dawned on me, like, hold on a second, I did this one flip in my spare time like a side hustle and I made about what I made last on my entire income? And so I got the bug pretty quick and jumped in with both feet,” Chip explained.

Joanna and Chip Gaines admit their youngest is growing up in a different world

Chip and Joanna Gaines had already raised four children before their youngest, Crew, came along. However, parenting looked a little different the second time around. In a candid interview with People magazine, the couple reflected on how their approach to raising kids has shifted now that they're in the public eye.

With Drake now 20, Ella 18, Duke 17, and Emmie 15, the couple admitted that their youngest, seven-year-old Crew, was growing up in a different world than his siblings.

“In my mind's eye, it's almost like we're sitting at this big long table, and you're on one side, and I'm on the other side. Crew is this little prep-school kid somewhere in the middle and we've got one of those little holders that holds the little egg. And we're like, ‘Excuse me, Alfred, can we please get another this or not?’” shared Chip.

He added with a laugh,

“Like, this kid is going to have a totally different upbringing. These prior four were out shoveling cow manure at [ages] 6, 8, and 10.”

Joanna Gaines acknowledged that times had changed and so had their perspective.

“It'll be a little different, but I think we have a little more capacity now to think more 'future.' What we care about the most is being together and celebrating moments together,” she explained.
