Chris Brown, the 36-year-old R&B singer, was taken into custody early on Thursday, May 15, 2025, by Metropolitan Police detectives at Manchester's The Lowry Hotel. He was accused of causing severe harm using a bottle. An incident that reportedly happened more than two years ago at a Tape nightclub in Hanover Square, Mayfair, Central London, on February 19, 2023.
According to music producer Abe Diaw, who spoke to The Sun, Brown assaulted him without warning, repeatedly striking him over the head with a bottle before punching and kicking him while he was on the ground. Diaw needed crutches after being discharged from the hospital.
The arrest was verified by the Metropolitan Police, who said:
"A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 02:00hrs on Thursday, 15 May on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He has been taken into custody where he remains. The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on 19 February 2023."
According to the Met Police:
‘’The investigation is being led by detectives from the Central West Area Basic Command Unit.’’
Before his UK tour dates, Brown had taken a private aircraft to Manchester. Police reportedly moved quickly after verifying his presence in the nation. Although some reports speculate that fresh developments or pressure from Diaw's legal team may have driven the decision, the arrest was made more than two years after the alleged occurrence, which left the public in suspense.
Apart from the criminal inquiry, Diaw has sued Brown for $16 million (£12 million) in civil court for the harm and losses he says he sustained.
