Home Alone is a Christmas comedy film that was released on November 16, 1990, by 20th Century Fox. Chris Columbus directed the film, and it was produced and written by John Hughes. The film was a critical success and earned $476.7 million at the box office. The success was followed by a sequel, which was also directed by Columbus.

The franchise then saw several other installments without the involvement of Columbus. Amid a series of reboots coming out of Hollywood, fans are reportedly hoping that they might see another addition to it. However, Columbus has refuted it. Let's find out what he said.

Chris Columbus talks about the Home Alone reboot

Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Home Alone films, recently spoke to ET about the franchise' reboot. He stated that he wouldn't want to revisit the film.

“I think Home Alone really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that. I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.”

As of now, Columbus' comments make it clear that he won't be involved in any future reboots of the franchise if they take place. He decided to step down from the director's chair after the second installment.

According to Deadline, in December 2024, Macaulay Culkin said that he would like to reprise the role of Kevin. He also said that the makers will have to pay him enough, and he has several ideas for a new installment.

The first film follows Kevin, an 8-year-old boy who is accidentally left behind by his family as they go to Paris for the Christmas celebration. He then has to protect his house from two robbers. It also starred Catherine O'Hara, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, and John Heard. Its success led to a sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which was released on November 20, 1992.

A third installment came out in 1997. It was made without Columbus and its primary cast. Unlike the previous films, the third installment was met with negative reviews. Three more films were released in 2002, 2012, and 2021. After the first two films involving Culkin and Columbus, all the films in the franchise have mostly met with mixed to negative critical response, as per reviews on IMDb.
