Colman Domingo quietly slid into Oz, as the actor has been revealed as the surprise voice of The Cowardly Lion in Wicked: For Good, a casting move that matches the film’s appetite for big-name cameos. The announcement followed director Jon M. Chu’s tease about an actor he DM’d on Instagram for a small but pivotal vocal cameo.

Domingo confirmed the role on his social channels, getting fans' reactions as they celebrated the announcement. The Lion appears as a grown-up version of the cub glimpsed in the first movie, joining the roster of iconic Oz figures given fresh life in Chu’s sequel.

In an interview with Deadline, Chu had told the outlet,

“I was like, ‘It’s not a ton of lines, but maybe you have a little time. I know you’re busy. I’ll come to you.’ He was like, ‘Why the f*ck not, let’s go!’ And then we went ahead and recorded the lines. Man, wait until the red carpet when the actor who gave us the Cowardly Lion’s voice steps foot on it. It’ll be wild.”

Domingo brings theatrical gravitas and vocal presence from stage and screen roles that earned him multiple award nominations and serious dramatic chops, which makes him a perfect fit for a character who historically balances bravado and vulnerability. The part doesn’t demand heavy screentime, but it does require a distinctive voice that can sell a moment. All in all, it's a casting that will add much excitement to the film as it hits screens this November.

Wicked: For Good is serving as the sequel to 2024's hit Wicked. Directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, the film adapts the second act of the 2003 Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman, itself inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel.

The star-studded ensemble includes Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, the Winkie prince and Captain of the Wizard’s Guard. Michelle Yeoh returns as the manipulative Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum reprises his role as the enigmatic Wizard, and Marissa Bode plays Nessarose Thropp, Elphaba’s paraplegic sister and the Governor of Munchkinland. Ethan Slater is back as Boq Woodsman, Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James return as Glinda’s loyal assistants Pfannee and ShenShen, and Sharon D. Clarke voices Dulcibear, the sisters’ former nanny.

New to Wicked: For Good's cast, Colman Domingo voices Brrr, the grown-up Cowardly Lion once rescued by Elphaba and Fiyero, while Peter Dinklage joins as Doctor Dillamond, the goat professor from Shiz. Keala Settle, Adam James, and Alice Fearn reprise their roles during Glinda’s wedding, and Broadway legend Kerry Ellis makes a mysterious cameo. Dorothy Gale also appears, taking on a more central role in this chapter of Oz’s story.

After years of development and production delays, Wicked: For Good will premiere in São Paulo, Brazil, on November 4, 2025, before its U.S. release by Universal Pictures on November 21, 2025.
