The Dallas Cowboys' Marshawn Kneeland has reportedly died at the age of 24. TMZ has reported that the defensive end bid his family goodbye in what was seemingly a mental health episode before he shot himself. The outlet obtained a police dispatch audio where operators in Texas can be heard speaking with Kneeland's girlfriend, Catalina. She said she got a concerning message from him at the time and was trying to get in touch with his agent. She said he was armed and struggled with mental health issues, noting that he would "end it all." Dispatch also said that the NFL called Plano PD about one of its players, noting that the "subject is texting his family goodbye." Everything we know about Marshawn Kneeland's shocking demise: TMZ has further reported that, according to Frisco PD, Marshawn Kneeland absconded after authorities tried to pull him over for violating traffic rules. The incident took place around 10:39 p.m. and prompted a police chase. The pursuit ended with officers discovering the car a few minutes later. It crashed on the Dallas Parkway, though Marshawn Keeland was absent from the scene. Initial reports state that he absconded on foot. "After losing visual of the vehicle, troopers located it minutes later, crashed on southbound Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway," Frisco Police said. "Initial reports indicated that a male subject, later identified as 24-year-old Marshawn Kneeland of Plano, TX, fled the scene on foot. Officers established a perimeter and initiated a search of the area with the assistance of the FPD K-9 and Drone units. Kneeland was later located at 1:31 a.m., deceased with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound." NBC News has reported that the Plano Police Department confirmed in a statement that officers responded “to a call for a welfare concern” at an address linked to the late player around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday. No one was present at the home at the time, they added. Marshawn Kneeland's demise comes days after he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, culminating in a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals. However, the Cowboys reportedly faced a 27-17 loss. The athlete was in his second season, having been a 2024 second-round draft pick out of Western Michigan. His agent, Jonathan Perzley, said in a statement: "I am shattered to confirm that my client and dearest friend Marshawn Kneeland passed away last night. Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, every practice and every moment on the field. To lose someone with his talent, spirit and goodness is a pain I can hardly put into words." The athlete's rookie season was reportedly off to a promising start before his knee got injured, forcing him to sit out five games. The NFL has also issued a statement confirming his demise on X: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina, family, friends and his teammates." The Dallas Cowboys also issued a statement, per CBC: "Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization," they said. "Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family." Robert Prince, the Miami Dolphins' receivers coach, addressed reporters on Thursday. Visibly holding back tears, he said of his and Marshawn Kneeland's bond: "We spent a lot of time [together] when he was injured and working out in the weight room. We'd shoot the breeze. He was a Western Michigan kid and I coached with the Lions for a while so we had some Michigan-type stories. Good kid. I'm sorry to hear that about him." Western Michigan coach Lance Taylor also echoed the sentiments: "My heart is absolutely broken over the loss of Marshawn Kneeland. Marshawn was so much more than an incredible football player -- he was a remarkable young man who meant so much to our program and to me personally. His leadership, energy, and smile were infectious, and he left a lasting impact on everyone in our program. Having coached him during my first season here, we developed a special bond that went far beyond football. His passion for life and his teammates were unmatched. Our entire Bronco Football family is devastated, and we send our deepest prayers to his family, teammates, and all who loved him. Marshawn will forever be a part of the Bronco brotherhood."
