A crew member involved in Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited epic drama The Odyssey has recently provided everyone with exciting new information about the adaptation of Homer's epic poem by the same name. Although Nolan has kept many of the details of the film under wraps, James Newman, who is a stunt performer in the film, offered a glimpse into the scale, tone, and heavy thematic aspects of the film.
From shooting extensively in historically authentic locations to putting in a great deal of hard work into the film, both of which are quintessentially Nolan, The Odyssey appears to be aligning itself as yet another monumental addition to the director's ouevre which blends of classical myth and humane storytelling with a strong emotional core, something we've yet to experience in this way.
Speaking on the Action for Everyone podcast, Newman recently praised The Odyssey and stated:
“They’re never going to make a movie like this again. I think it’s going to be an epic of all epics. It’s going to be Nolan at his best. No holds barred. He definitely fights a battle that a lot of people aren’t fighting."
He further added some insight on how Nolan is handpicking the locations for the film, as he continued:
"They found locations and Nolan would go like, ‘Okay, this cave, has anyone ever filmed here before?’ And the local guy is like, ‘No.’ [Nolan] is like, ‘Okay, great, we’re going to film here.’ This like untouched place. He wants to be the first person there to do it, he wants to feel like no one has ever touched ground here. And every location is a hike. There’s a castle, I think it’s Odysseus’ home, but it’s up on a hill and it’s like a two kilometer hike to get up there.”
More details on The Odyssey
The Odyssey is shaping up to be one of Nolan's most ambitious,[[ star-studded projects, which features a stunning ensemble that consists of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, and more. Damon is portraying the role of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who comes back to his wife Penelope, played by Hathaway. Holland is playing Telemachus, Odysseus' son, and Zendaya will be playing Athena. Pattinson is set to be Hermes while Theron is playing Circe.
Newman also praised Holland's physical abilities in the film as he talked about getting to train the actor for the film, as he said,
“I had the opportunity to make some action with a talented group of people for the film and also had the opportunity to train Matt Damon and Tom Holland for the film. All the rumors about Tom being physically able are so true. He can literally do anything. He should get every physical role possible.”
Filming for the film began in February this year, and the crew has been filming all across Greece and Europe.
The Odyssey is set to hit theaters on 17 July 2026.
