Critically acclaimed war thriller Sisu lands on Hulu ahead of sequel release

Sisu is a Finnish film in the action-thriller and historical genres. The film is penned and directed by Jalmari Helander, while Petri Jokiranta is the producer. It had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness section. Here's the official synopsis as per Letterboxd:

"When an ex-soldier who discovers gold in the Lapland wilderness tries to take the loot into the city, German soldiers led by a brutal SS officer battle him."

Its sequel, titled Sisu: Road to Revenge is slated to be released on November 21, 2025. Ahead of its release, the first one is dropping on a streaming platform.

Sisu drops on Hulu ahead of sequel release

The Finnish war film Sisu has dropped on Hulu, where it continues to attract a sizable viewership. It holds the #3 spot on the streamer's Top 15 movies list. The film focuses on the Lapland War (during the Second World War) that took place between Nazi Germany and Finland. The plot revolves around a gold prospector, who was a Finnish Army commando.

On September 9, 2022, the film had its world premiere in the midnight madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival. This was followed by its Finland release on January 27, 2023. The film was eventually released in the United States on April 28. It met with positive reviews and grossed $14.3 million.

Aksel Hennie, in a 2022 Collider interview, shared his apprehension about the script, which eventually changed. He said,

“When I read the script the first time I couldn't figure out if this movie's gonna be fantastic or shit because the script was so crazy. So I asked my agents to get a conversation with Jalmari to see if I believed him to be the right director for this crazy script. Two seconds into this conversation, I fell in love with Jalmari and the project. There was no turning back. I so wanted to do it. I'd play any part in that movie just to be a part of the project.”

A sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge, will be released on November 21, 2025.
