Dance Parents is the upcoming comedy-drama film backed by Universal Pictures.
The film will be in the realm of family comedy, and the studio was involved in a bidding war for this project. It has been confirmed that both Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum have been roped in to play the lead roles in the film.
The announcement comes amid the revival of the comedy genre in Hollywood with films like Happy Gilmore 2 and the recently released reboot The Naked Gun. For a while, viewers did not get to see many mainstream comedy films coming out of the industry, which appears to be changing now.
Dance Parents to star Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum
Deadline has recently reported that Universal Pictures will be producing Dance Parents. The upcoming family comedy film will star Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum in the lead roles. The duo will also co-produce it. The film will be directed and produced by Jonathan Levine, while Meghan Malloy will be writing the script.
The film is currently in the development stage. It had attracted several bidders before Universal Pictures managed to win the bidding war. Other producers of the film include Beth Kono, AJ Dix, Matt Maher, Drue Robertson, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan, Eve Brigham, Garret Levitz, Jonathan Levine, and Gillian Bohrer. Their production banners include Secret Menu, Free Association Company, and Megamix.
For Universal Pictures, Ryan Jones and Christine Sun will be supervising the film's production. The plot details are currently under wraps. However, looking at the title, Dance Parents might revolve around a dance competition where kids and their parents participate. Tatum got a breakthrough with the dance film Step Up and also shook a leg in the Magic Mike franchise. In 2013, both Tatum and Theron had danced together on the stage.
Workwise, Theron was recently seen in Netflix's superhero action film The Old Guard 2, where she reprised the role of Andromache of Scythia. She will be playing Circe in Christopher Nolan's epic fantasy film The Odyssey, which will be released on July 17, 2026. Another upcoming project of hers is the action thriller film Apex.
Tatum had last starred and co-produced the 2024's Blink Twice. His future film projects include Roofman, Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday, and Josephine.
