Among all the upcoming projects DC Studios had lined up, Sgt. Rock's action war movie was one that fans were looking forward to. However, according to recent reports, the project has been halted for unknown reasons, and it is not yet clear if the film will go back to production. Sgt. Rock, who was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, made his comic book debut in 1959. It was one of DC's longest-running series.

The film was set to be directed by Luca Guadagnino, who would have made his debut in the DC studios with the project. Filming was supposed to start this summer in England with Colin Farrell taking the lead as the titular character. Additionally, it was in the middle of the casting process, attempting to find actors to portray the men of Easy Company, the combat regiment against Nazi forces in Europe. Mike Faist was reportedly in line for a part as well, and according to sources, the character of a female French Resistance fighter had also been established.

After James Gunn's takeover of the studio, multiple projects have been introduced and scrapped as the director has continued to work on several new scripts. However, many fans have pointed out that projects like Sgt. Rock would barely bring in large engagement from fans, as they are not that popular.

Although the reason for the project's closure is unknown, an insider claimed that it was due to the outdoor shooting requirements. According to the insider, the idea would be reevaluated at the end of the year for a potential summer shoot in 2026 and was not going away entirely. Another source suggested that Guadagnino was still unproven in the action film industry and that higher-ups might have been hesitant despite the film's modest budget of $70 million, which is little for comic book films.

James Gunn is kicking off his reign at DC with the release of Superman, starring David Corenswet, which will be the first installment in DC's first chapter: Gods and Monsters. The film will have Gunn's take on the iconic superhero and will explore his life as he deals with his Kryptonian powers and his double identities of the superhero and Clark Kent. Besides Corenswet, it also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Unlike other superhero films, this one will have less emphasis on his origins and will instead revolve around him reuniting with his heritage as he spends life with his adoptive human family. It's one of the most anticipated films of the year and is being eyed by fans as one of DC's biggest projects in years.

Superman is set to release on July 11, 2025.
