Debbie Harry's biopic in Hollywood is long due, and the singer already has the perfect actress in her mind who can play her in the future. In a recent interview, Harry nominated Florence Pugh as the actress who she would like to be played by, and it's a sentiment shared by the latter who also expressed her interest in playing the lead singer of Blondie.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, Harry talked about a potential biopic made of her as she told the outlet her dream casting, saying,
“If it were somebody like Florence Pugh, I would be in heaven. I just think she’s a great actor and she could do anything.”
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Pugh is also interested in playing Harry, as she talked about her interest in playing her during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2020. Answering a question about which famous figure she would want to portray on screen, Pugh said,
"Blondie, just because she's so cool."
Pugh would actually fit the role well, having sang before on Zach Braff's A Good Person where she wrote and sang several original songs. As of now, she is busy working with the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Yelena Belova.
More details about Florence Pugh's career
Florence Pugh broke through with a knockout lead in Lady Macbeth in 2016, a grim period piece that announced her as an actor capable of carrying heavy, unsettling roles. The performance earned her critical acclaim and marked the beginning of a career defined by fearlessness and range.
2019 was her banner year. She delivered three completely different yet equally magnetic performances, the chilling, grief-laden Dani in Midsommar, the witty and ambitious Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women which earned her an Oscar nomination, and the heartfelt, scrappy Paige in Fighting With My Family. That trio of roles cemented her status as one of the most versatile and exciting young actors in Hollywood.
After conquering the indie circuit, Florence stepped into blockbuster territory. She joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Yelena Belova in Black Widow in 2021, quickly becoming a fan favorite for her dry humor and emotional depth. She later returned for the role in Hawkeye and Thunderbolts and is all set to feature in Avengers: Doomsday next.
Between major studio films, she continued pursuing daring and intimate projects, from the haunting The Wonder in 2022 to Olivia Wilde’s provocative Don’t Worry Darling in the same year, and her emotional portrayal of Jean Tatlock in Oppenheimer in 2023. In 2024, she entered sci-fi prestige territory with Dune: Part Two, further proving her ability to thrive in any genre.
All in all, Florence Pugh has had an iconic career, spanning across genres and roles that are as different as the last, which proves her versatility as an actress. From indie darlings to folk-horror and superhero films, she has done it all. The only thing missing is a biopic, and with Debbie Harry's blessings, we might just see Pugh leading Blondie soon.
