After nearly 50 years lighting up the screen, Denzel Washington isn’t losing sleep over Oscar chatter. The two-time Academy Award winner, known for Glory, Training Day, and a career that’s basically a masterclass in acting, recently shrugged off awards season hype with his trademark mix of humor and humility.
Speaking on Jake's Takes, the actor shared his thoughts on Oscar wins as he stated,
“I’ve been at this a long time, and there’s times when I’ve won, shouldn’t have won, didn’t win, should have won. Man gives the award, God gives the award. I’m not that interested in Oscars. People say, ‘Well, where do you keep it?’ I say, ‘Next to the other one.'”
He then added,
“I’m not bragging. I’m just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, it ain’t going to do me a bit of good.”
His comment coincides with the actor's recent statements about retirement as he told Vanity Fair,
“I no longer use the word retirement. I’m looking for opportunities to bring God’s purpose to my work. That’s where I’m at.”
Denzel Washington's latest project is Highest 2 Lowest, Spike Lee's neo crime thriller, also starring A$AP Rocky. It draws inspiration from Akira Kurosawa's 1963 Japanese film High and Low, which is based on the 1959 novel King's Ransom by Ed McBain.
More details about Denzel Washington's career
Denzel Washington has been owning screens for almost 50 years. With two Oscar wins, for Glory and Training Day, plus a parade of legendary nominations from Cry Freedom to The Tragedy of Macbeth. For Washington, it’s never been about trophies; it’s about the rush of a scene, the weight of a character, the story that lingers after the credits.
Talking about his role on Lee's film, the actor tells Vanity Fair,
“In [most of] the time I’ve been an actor, I wouldn’t even have been allowed to play a part like this. No white directors were hiring us, and no studios were hiring us. We could be a slave. We could be the friend. We could be the buddy. I’ve seen it all in the 50 years I’ve been at it. And that’s why I called Spike. I’ve never heard from certain other filmmakers—well, let me not go down that road. But that’s why I called Spike. I trust Spike, and he trusts me.”
In Highest 2 Lowest, Denzel Washington is David King, a music mogul who’s mastered the game but finds life throwing him a curveball. Just as he’s weighing the sale of his empire, his son gets kidnapped by an ambitious rapper, A$AP Rocky, though another child is mistakenly kidnapped instead.
Highest 2 Lowest will be in theaters on August 15, 2025.
