A nostalgic piece of pop culture history had suddenly made the headlines on October 7, 2021, thanks to an Instagram post by Lana Del Rey. The singer posted a throwback Abercrombie & Fitch ad featuring both Lana and actress Lindsay Lohan.

The image, which is from the late 1990s or early 2000s, has now gone viral as fans admire the two stars who once posed for the iconic teen brand before breaking it into the mainstream media.

Though the photo is real, fans at that time were not aware that both Lohan and Del Rey had early connections to Abercrombie & Fitch. Back then, the label was famous for featuring fresh-faced youths in its ad campaigns, many of whom would go on to become Hollywood stars later on. Other former models for Abercrombie include Taylor Swift, Channing Tatum, Olivia Wilde, and Jennifer Lawrence.

In the picture, a younger Lana Del Rey can be seen posing in a flannel shirt and black vest, holding a soccer ball. Then standing directly behind her in the group photo is the redheaded Lindsay Lohan, who was already known for her role in The Parent Trap.

According to the Daily Mail, the picture is said to have been taken in the 1990s and was printed on shopping bags for Abercrombie & Fitch during that time.

More about Lana Del Rey's post and her journey to stardom

The picture was posted by Lana Del Rey, the now 39-year-old, world-renowned singer and songwriter, during a brief engagement with Instagram following a social media blackout. She remembered the moment in the caption.

Me and Lindsay Lohan on a bag when they did a local Abercrombie recruit for kids. Account open for two minutes. She wrote.

In a 2023 interview with Harper's Bazaar, she also stated that Lindsay attended school with her cousins and was in a play with them. Lana also said that she felt excited but played it cool at that time.

Lana Del Rey, real name Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, was born in Manhattan and raised in Lake Placid, New NewYork. According to Britannica, after a troubled youth with alcoholism, she became sober and eventually went on to Fordham University, where she graduated with a degree in philosophy.

Lana Del Rey eventually picked up the guitar from her uncle and started performing under various names like Lizzy Grant and May Jailer. She put out early music like Kill Kill (2008) and Lana Del Ray A.K.A. Lizzy Grant (2010), all of which went unnoticed by the general public and media.

She got her first big breakthrough in 2011 with “Video Games,” a ballad that went viral. The song’s popularity gave her a major label deal with Interscope Records. After which she released her debut album, Born to Die (2012), which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and included hits like Summertime Sadness.
