Nina Dobrev is opening up about the reason she decided to call off her engagement with Shaun White almost six months before they parted ways.
The Vampire Diaries actress parted ways with the Olympian after five years together. The pair had gotten engaged in October 2024, though they ended their engagement merely months later. Speaking with E! News in March, Dobrev explained:
"I really want to enjoy it and not rush that process. We're just enjoying being engaged at this point and being in that sort of phase because a lot of your life is—you have a boyfriend for half of your life and then you have a husband for half of your life, but the fiancé period is very short." She added, "It's so fun to say fiancé."
Everything we know about Nina Dobrev and Shaun White's split:
A source recently told People Magazine of Nina Dobrev and Shaun White's decision to split up:
"It was a mutual decision, and wasn't an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another."
As of this writing, the two have yet to address the split head-on, and the reasons behind the same remain unclear. Back in June, White told People Magazine that he and Nina Dobrev were n a "fun sort of planning phase of life," and that his future with her had "really become the focal point" of his life.
"It's very exciting to have new aspirations and new things that we're going after," he said. "It's very humbling and very exciting, and she's excited."
According to Yahoo! Entertainment, the two were last seen in public at the end of August. Earlier this month, Nina Dobrev was seen solo at the premiere of Eternity at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Hello! Magazine has reported that the actress and Olympian snowboarder met in 2019 and began dating shortly after. They confirmed their romance in February 2020, when they took a trip to South Africa. At the time, the actress was filming for Redeeming Love.
Following Shaun's decision to return from snowboarding in 2022, the actress brought in all of his loved ones for a special surprise before he kicked off his final competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
"She knew all of my friends and family couldn't be there and she got everyone together and made this incredible video of everyone saying how much they wish they could be there and sending their love and support," Shaun told E! at the time. "So that was just so wonderful. It really set the tone for the rest of the trip."
