Robert De Niro has come to the forefront of controversy after a video of him allegedly taking a jibe at President Trump went viral.

In a video going viral on X, the veteran actor can be seen taking to the stage to slam President Trump.

"I'm going to say one thing, fuck Trump," he says in the video to a roaring audience before they give him a standing ovation. "It's no longer down with Trump, it's fuck Trump," he doubled down.

The rumors state that the actor slammed the president at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on January 11, 2026. The clip in question has since raked in over 1.5 million views on X as of this writing.

Although Robert De Niro did pass the remark, the original clip was taken from the 2018 Tony Awards, and not this year's Golden Globes.

Robert De Niro's comments against Trump over the years explored:

Back in 2018, following Robert De Niro's comments about Trump on stage, CBS confirmed to Variety that his comments were not planned and that he improvised them. The network aired that year's show on a 10-second delay, allowing them to censor the actor's comments on the live broadcast.

In a statement, CBS said,

"Mr. De Niro’s comments were unscripted and unexpected."

This past October, Robert De Niro doubled down on his anti-Trump rhetoric when he made an appearance on MS NOW's 'The Weekend'.

"Trump does not understand anything about humanity, people. He has no empathy. I don’t know where — what he is, but he’s an alien, and he wants to hurt this country," he said. "It’s something deeply psychological in him, he wants to hurt people. He wants to hurt this country, doesn’t care," the 'Taxi Driver' actor added.

At the time, he also called on people to engage in the No Kings protest against the president, writing on Instagram,

"The original No Kings protest was 250 years ago. We’ve had two and a half centuries of democracy since then, often challenging, sometimes messy, always essential. And we fought in two world wars to preserve it. Now we have a would-be king who wants to take it away, King Donald I. F*** that!"

The Guardian also reported in April 2019 that, during an appearance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert at the time, Robert De Niro told the host he previously tried giving Trump the benefit of the doubt:

“That’s what I said right after he was elected. Give him a chance. I give everybody the benefit of the doubt. This guy has proven himself to be a total loser.” He is previously quoted as calling the president a “total loser” and “wannabe gangster."

When Colbert asked the actor why audiences found the gangster genre appealing, he said,

“People like the outlaw type thing, except we have a wannabe gangster in the White House now.”

Robert De Niro also dubbed Trump a dumbbell, saying:

“Even gangsters have morals and they have ethics. They have a code and you know when you give somebody your word it’s your word because it’s all you have is your word. This guy, he doesn’t even know what that means.”
