Did Ryan Reynolds spoof Neil Patrick Harris's Doogie Howser M.D.? Reynolds calls Harris a 'b*tthole' for 'stealing' his role in Deadpool video game

Ryan Reynolds is possessive of Deadpool.

Reynolds, who has served as the face and voice of the foul-mouthed Marvel character for years, has been outdone by Neil Patrick Harris, who has just been announced as the voice of the comic book character in Marvel’s Deadpool VR. The new game comes as part of the Meta Quest 3 and 3S.

Shortly after the trailer for the game came out on Saturday, Ryan Reynolds shared a video of himself reacting hysterically to the news. In it, he can be seen sporting a lab coat and glasses as he sits in front of a computer, seemingly mimicking Harris' breakout role as a teenage physician in the famed sitcom Doogie Howser, MD.

Journaling on his computer while staying in character, Ryan Reynolds pens:

"Today, I learned a lesson about b*ttholes they don’t teach you in medical school. People who steal your signature role are the biggest b*ttholes of all. No, I don’t blame Meta Quest. Neil Patrick Harris is an amazing actor with the nurturing voice of an angel, but even though I haven’t hit puberty yet, I still know when you’re getting totally screwed."

Robyn Lively then intervenes for a "house call." For the unversed, Robyn, who is Blake Lively's half-sister, played a role on the show as Harris's love interest and a nursing student:

"My girlfriend, what are you doing here? If my dad sees you here, he's gonna freak," Ryan Reynolds says to the voice, who responds: "You're a 48-year-old man." He shoots back: "I'm a 14-year-old medical prodigy who's going through the change."

Reynolds then jokingly breaks the fourth wall to remind his sister-in-law, "Robin, you're being paid." Lively ignores him to say, "This is vindictive and stupid."

Ryan Reynolds played the titular role in the R-rated franchise for four feature films: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Deadpool (2016), Deadpool 2 (2018), and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).

Here's everything we know about the forthcoming game that has Ryan Reynolds upset:

For the unversed, the forthcoming Deadpool VR game is being developed by Twisted Pixel and Oculus Studios, in collaboration with Marvel Games. It chronicles a new tale involving the character. As reported by Variety, the game’s description reads as follows:

"After being pulled through a portal to Mojoworld, Deadpool sees a chance to get rich—like really rich. He signs a sketchy contract without reading any of the fine print and then it’s off to visit a bunch of locations from across the Marvel universe, battling against iconic (and not-so-iconic) villains. It’s real metaverse stuff—in the Marvel Universe sense, not the VR one."

Marvel’s Deadpool VR is expected to drop late this year, exclusively for Meta Quest 3 and 3S VR devices. According to the game developers, "if you can imagine it, you can probably do it" in the VR game:

“Sure, you can simply stab or shoot your enemies, but where’s the fun in that? Punch someone while holding a grenade? Check. Take your recently exploded-off arm and throw it at the bad guys? Gross, but also check. Hold an enemy’s face into a spinning propeller? A bloody, but efficient, check. Soldiers, demonic dogs, weird humanoid lizards, creepy worm-things, they’re all waiting to be dismembered in creative (some might say sadistic) ways," they said, per the outlet.

The House of Ideas also revealed that She-Hulk and Rocket Raccoon will be debuting as characters players can opt for in Marvel Cosmic Invasion, which is currently in development from Tribute Games. This is expected to launch on most platforms later this year.
