A new video of Sydney Sweeney allegedly reacting to the American Eagle controversy is going viral.

The Euphoria actress has been embroiled in controversy following the release of her ad campaign for the denim company. She was accused of trying to promote “N*zi propaganda” through the campaign. Now, a video of her crying and addressing some backlash has been doing the rounds online.

However, the video is from May 2021 and was a response to the harsh criticism over her appearance. At the time, she hopped on a livestream on Instagram to issue a message to her trolls:

“I would never actually do this, like ever, but I think it’s really important for people to see how words actually affect people,” Sydney said. “And I know everyone says ‘you can’t read things, you shouldn’t read things,’ but I’m a f***ing person. People need to be nicer on social media because it’s really f***ed up.”

The backlash against Sydney Sweeney and American Eagle explored:

In recent weeks, the US-founded fashion brand has come under intense scrutiny online for its new campaign. In the ad, the 27-year-old White Lotus actress can be heard saying she has great “jeans,” which is wordplay on “genes.”

“Sydney Sweeney has great genes jeans," a billboard promoting the campaign read, per The Guardian. “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality, and even eye colour. My jeans are blue," she says in the video.

However, critics have been accusing the company and Sydney Sweeney of trying to promote eugenics, which is mainly popular among white supremacists. It is the idea that the human race can be bred selectively to promote “desirable traits.” These traits often align with conventional beauty standards, such as blue eyes, fair skin, and a lean body.

As of this writing, the company has yet to pull the ad. However, they have responded to the backlash. An insider reported that about 70% of viewers in an independent poll reacted to the ad positively. A source told TMZ:

“This is yet another example of how social media is just not reflective of real life. The absurd response from some corners of the internet is absolutely not reflective of how American Eagle’s customers feel.”

The campaign was also touted as a fundraising initiative for a domestic violence charity and a mental health support line. A chunk of the proceeds from The Sydney Jean, which is a special edition, was bequeathed to the Crisis Text Line. In February this year, the brand donated $100,000 towards expanding access to mental health at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

As of this writing, Sydney Sweeney has yet to address the backlash herself. Stay tuned to SoapCentral for more.
