Trump made headlines during Chelsea’s Club World Cup win after appearing on the award stage next to players and officials. As Chelsea captain Reece James lifted the trophy, Cole Palmer could be seen celebrating behind him. But many were surprised to see former U.S. President Donald Trump standing between Palmer and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez during the ceremony.

Cole Palmer later said he was confused to see the President on the stand during the trophy lift. He knew Trump was attending the match but did not expect him to be part of the on-field celebration.

Palmer, who won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s top player, had a standout performance. But during the medal ceremony, attention shifted to the President, who appeared to be handed a medal by FIFA President Gianni Infantino according to AP News.

Why was Trump on the stage during the ceremony?

The President was seen on the main stage just as Chelsea’s players were getting their medals. His appearance at the final was known in advance, but many assumed he would stay in the VIP area. Seeing him next to players and officials surprised many people.

Cole Palmer said, “I knew he was going to be here, but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy.”

So far, FIFA has not released a statement explaining Trump’s presence on the stage. It’s possible that Infantino invited Trump as a special guest, but no official reason has been shared with the public or the press.

Did Trump really get a medal?

Video clips and photos from the match show the POTUS received something from Gianni Infantino. This happened right after Reece James got his winner’s medal. The POTUS was then seen walking away from the stage with what looked like a medal around his neck.

Neither FIFA nor Trump’s team has explained what exactly was given to him. Cole Palmer didn’t make a big deal out of it. He focused more on the match and his role in the team’s win. Still, the image of the President receiving a medal stood out during what was meant to be Chelsea’s moment.
