Bring it On star Hayden Panettiere, in an interview with Us Weekly published on April 30, revealed why she took a four-year break from acting, noting that she "desperately" needed it.

"I had taken four years off. Didn’t know or plan to, but that’s just the way it panned out. And I desperately needed it."

Hayden has made a comeback with her upcoming film, A Breed Apart, which is scheduled to hit the US theatres on May 16. The movie revolves around a group of influencers stranded on a deserted island, which is occupied by dogs that have developed a thirst for human flesh.

The actress discussed that the break has helped her take a new direction in her career,

"The things that I’ve done before … it was just different enough that I felt like it was a blank canvas that I could paint onto anything I wanted on. And now try to take my career in a direction that I wasn’t able to go in before.”

Penettiere expressed gratitude to the people in her life who supported her through the break and helped her "jump back in" into acting.

More about Hayden Panettiere's break from acting

Before taking on her upcoming film, A Breed Apart, which is scheduled to release on May 16, Hayden Panettiere was last seen in Amber Alert (2024) and Scream VI (2023).

She took a break after the television series Nashville concluded, where she played the role of Juliette Barnes, before resuming her acting career with Scream VI (2023).

The actress, during a previous interview with The Messenger published in January 2024, had opened up about how working on Nashville affected her personally since the characters were similar to her real-life experiences. The actress drew out the parallels from the series' plot and revealed,

"They weren't doing their homework. They weren't creating new storylines. They were just looking at my life and going, 'Oh, let's just take what she's going through and put our little spin on it.' And then, ta-da! It's done and done."

The actress also noted how her busy acting career had an impact on her personal life and that she wasn't "able to take care" of herself. She decided she just wanted to "drum it out and watch mindless television and great shows."

In another previous interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2023, Hayden expressed her fears of making a comeback and mentioned that she was "worried" that she "couldn't act anymore."
