Pop icon and former Disney starlet, Sabrina Carpenter, opened up about how she receives backlash for using s*xual themes and lyrics in her music in her recent interview. The backlash is especially loud due to the fact that Carpenter got her start as an actress working on kids' shows, specifically Disney shows such as Austin & Ally, Girl Meets World, and more.

She told Variety, "I think it wouldn’t matter so much if I wasn’t a childhood figure for some people. But I also can’t really help that. It’s not my fault that I got a job when I was 12, and you won’t let me evolve.”

Sabrina also spoke about how she, as a child, had different ideas of growing up and how the older she got, the more she wanted to confidently own her sexuality.

“I always thought, ‘When I grow up, then I get to embrace my sexuality more. I don’t even know what that means yet!’ I don’t think they do. I wish I’d had more open conversations about all of it when I was younger, but people feel too scared to talk about it.”

At the end of the day, the young star is trying to live her own life in her own terms and has had an evolving journey from her first album to her latest. The Espresso singer said that,

“people think, ‘Oh, she’ll say and do anything.’ No. I really do have boundaries with myself — you’d be surprised! I’m just actually living my life, and you’re watching. If you don’t like it, it’s not for you. If you do like it, let’s play.”

She concluded the interview by expressing that music will always take priority for her, but it is sometimes fun to play a different role.

“Music is always going to be my true No. 1, but there’s something really special about playing an incredible role. So I would say No. 1 is music and No. 1½ is acting.” Then she gives me a sly grin. “And we know how the half makes a difference.”

Recently, it was announced that Sabrina Carpenter will be taking the lead in the Alice in Wonderland musical by Universal Studios, while there are also talks of her being in the upcoming Mamma Mia 3.

Fans react to Sabrina Carpenter's response

Fans had a supportive response to Sabrina's unabashed answer to the backlash and criticism for her artistry. Most fans were in agreement and understood her perspective regarding her evolving and changing journey.

One user commented,

"She’s allowed to grow up and own her sexuality. disney kids aren’t frozen in time at 14. let her cook"

Another questioned,

"wait people are angry she grew up and started using adult themes in her music?.. wtf is her content supposed to be perpetually for 12-year-olds or something??"

One fan had a personal connection,

"honestly i relate because everyone loves the idea of you until you show a little confidence and suddenly it is too much"

While another said,

"sexual references in music has existed for decades at this point, and Sabrina Carpenter might have been a former disney star turned horny Publicist for hollywood, but lets be honest here? she isn't marketed for kids and its a lazy excuse to even make that argument."

The Grammy winner just wrapped up her highly successful Short n Sweet world tour. Sabrina Carpenter is also known to stand on her business, as this week she called out the ICE social media on using her music to promote their agenda, saying,

"this video is evil and disgusting. Do not ever involve me or my music to benefit your inhumane agenda.”

The comment came on a video of ICE officers tackling and arresting people, using the lyric, "have you ever tried this one?" from her song Juno. But that wasn't the end of it, as a White House representative responded to her comment by referencing her own music,

“Here’s a Short’n’Sweet message for Sabrina Carpenter: we won’t apologise for deporting dangerous criminal illegal murderers, rapists, and pedophiles from our country. Anyone who would defend these sick monsters must be stupid, or is it slow?”

Sabrina Carpenter joins a long list of artists who have condemned the White House and President Donald Trump for using their music. Other artists include Beyonce, who has openly endorsed Kamala Harris, The Foo Fighters, Olivia Rodrigo, who also had a similar interaction as Ms 'Brina over the usage of her songs, and more.
