Disney has a brand new update for their upcoming sequel Aladdin 2, the magical live-action film that brought the life of Agrabah to life. According to reports, the film will go into production in 2026, which means the sequel will reach fans sooner than they think!

The sequel has faced multiple rumors of cancellations and delays, so much that Mena Massoud, who plays the titular character in the film spoke up about how the Hollywood strikes affected the project's advancements. Speaking to ScreenRant, Massoud said:

"I don't have any updates. I think like you said, the strike kind of just put everything on hold. I know they were trying to get it off the ground for a long time but I have no idea where it's at. Listen, we shot in 2017. It's been six years now since we shot and wrapped the project. To me, at a certain point, life just goes on. I'm sure they have their reasons. I know they were trying for a long time, so I don't know what the obstacles exactly were. But maybe now the strike is over, they'll continue to try to get it off the ground."

Now that a reported filming date is here, fans can be more hopeful to see more of Naomi Scott, Massoud and hopefully, Will Smith. More updates on the film are awaited for now.

In 2019, Guy Ritchie rubbed Disney's lamp and created Aladdin, a live action film inspired by the 1992 animated classic, that managed to win over audiences of all ages and became a benchmark for live-action musicals. The film was co-written by Ritchie and John August, and gave the film a new perspective with newer colors, reshaping a childhood fairytale into something grander and more magical.

The story revolves around the mythical city of Agrabah, where a street-smart dreamer named Aladdin, played by Mena Massoud and his mischievous monkey Abu cross paths with Princess Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott, a royal who refuses to be a silent jewel in her father’s palace. Their fates twist together when Jafar, played by Marwan Kenzari, the Sultan’s scheming vizier, seeks the magic lamp hidden deep in the Cave of Wonders, a lamp that only “the diamond in the rough” can touch.

Will Smith played the role of the genie, a character that has stayed in his career as one of his best. Fans have hoped he would return for a sequel for some more magic, as the original film showed him go back to being a human, finding the love of his life and even having children.

As of now, we wait for further confirmation on Aladdin 2. Aladdin is available to stream on Disney+.
