In some news that appeals to the child within all of us, Disney World is expanding! According to documents released by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) and subsequently examined by People Magazine, Disney has begun plans to develop a new "major theme park" (roughly 500 acres) and two additional "minor" parks (roughly 300 acres each) in Florida.

Also on the docket are a few new resort hotels, additional shopping and dining areas, and an 18-hole golf course at its existing Orlando Resort. The total prospective area to be developed by the group is projected to be 2,629 acres, although Disney is open to the possibility of changing their plans on the fly as they continue to develop the land.

According to People Magazine,

“Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the CFTOD agreed to allow Disney to move forward with its plans to invest up to $17 billion in Orlando in July 2024, which included plans for new parks, hotels and more.”

While this is exciting news, fans shouldn’t hold their breath, as the slated development plan is set to culminate 20 years from now in 2045.

Disney World announces massive expansion on the horizon

While the major changes are new parks are more long-term goals, Disney World has confirmed several additions for the Orlando resort soon. At the Disney Experiences showcase at D23 on August 10, lots of exciting changes were announced for the Walt Disney World experience.

First, the chairperson of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Josh D'Amaro, revealed that a new Indiana Jones-themed ride will be arriving at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Then, Bruce Vaughn, the Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Imagineering, joined him to discuss an Encanto-themed ride that will hopefully blossom into one of the park's most desirable attractions. Both are currently expected to debut by 2027.

Following that up, comedy icon Billy Crystal then announced that a Monsters Inc. land will be coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios. Interestingly, it will feature a first across all Disney Parks, as it will be their first-ever suspended coaster. The arrival of Villains Land at the Magic Kingdom was also announced.

Disney Parks' official TikTok shared the news with a caption that reads,

"Villains Land is coming to Magic Kingdom with two major attractions, dining, and shopping at Walt Disney World.”

It seems as though Disney World is going through some incredible changes that will only continue to enhance its legacy of films and characters that have continued to transcend time.
