Alec Baldwin has been through a lot of stress and scrutiny over the 2021 accidental shooting on the set of the film Rust that led to the death of Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer on the set.

The actor's wife, Hilaria Baldwin, stated that the incident still continues to haunt Baldwin. She revealed that following this incident, he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Alec Baldwin’s PTSD revelation came via the couple’s reality show, The Baldwins, which premiered on TLC in February 2025. The series offered a glimpse into how the tragedy had affected their family. In one clip, Hilaria Baldwin talked about Baldwin’s alleged survivor’s guilt. Hilaria mentioned,

"He was diagnosed with PTSD, and he says in his darkest moments, 'If an accident had to have happened this day, why am I still here? Why couldn’t it have been me?'"

During a recent appearance on Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa, Hilaria revealed how the tragedy has impacted her husband. When asked if she still thinks Alec suffers from PTSD, Hilaria said,

"He is very different than he used to be... I think that to be in such a tragic situation, that was going to forever change him."

A look into the controversial Rust shooting involving Alec Baldwin and family's support

The shooting took place on October 21, 2021, while Alec Baldwin was rehearsing a scene that includes him drawing a revolver. The gun fired a live round, fatally wounding Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Baldwin has maintained that he did not fire the weapon and thought it was a prop loaded only with dummy ammunition. The event sparked a series of legal actions that led to charges of involuntary manslaughter, which were later dismissed in July 2024 due to a prosecutorial discovery violation, as reported by CNN.

Following the incident, Hilaria also talked about her husband's hypersensitivity to loud sounds and emotional dissociation, which are both classic symptoms of PTSD.

During this period of struggle, Hilaria pointed out that it was their children who helped Alec maintain his strength and helped him in his recovery process. The couple, who married in 2012, have seven children together, and Baldwin also has a daughter named Ireland from his first marriage. Hilaria Baldwin added,

"But he is, little by little, I think that he's working, It's hard, but he's working on it, and I think that the children encourage him to work on it."

Even though Alec Baldwin's legal battles over the Rust shooting have concluded, the event has forever altered his life and appears to have a significant impact on his health.
