Australian actress Ruby Rose shared her thoughts about Sydney Sweeney’s portrayal of former professional boxer Christy Martin in the new biopic by her name. Sharing her thoughts on Threads on November 11, she suggested that Sweeney “ruined” the biopic. The Australian actress wrote:

“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It's part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”

Her statement went on:

“For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the 'people'. None of 'the people' want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You're a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

According to Us Weekly, the movie did not perform well at the box office. The film premiered on November 7, grossing just $1.3 million during its opening weekend. As understood from Ruby Rose’s statement, she did not appear in Christy. Sydney Sweeney had previously expressed her thoughts on working in the film and what she expected viewers to see. In a statement to Pink News in late October 2025, she said:

“I am so excited for them to see Christy. She is an unbelievable advocate for the community and I believe this is a beautiful story to tell.”

One of the highlights of the biopic is how Martin explored her sexual identity. The former boxer had previously praised Sydney Sweeney’s work in the film. Christy Martin said that Sweeney did an “awesome job” that was unforeseen.

Sydney Sweeney writes about how the biopic became an important honor for her

On November 10, Sydney Sweeney shared a carousel on Instagram that showed a few behind-the-scenes moments from the film. In a lengthy caption, the actress wrote that she was proud of director David Michôd’s work. Not only that but she felt the biopic had a great story to tell the audience. She wrote:

“I am so deeply proud of this movie. proud of the film david made. proud of the story we told. proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. this experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”

Sydney Sweeney went on to say that Christy Martin’s biopic was a marker of hope, surviving odds and being courageous. She felt the campaigns they did helped people be aware of domestic abuse. Above all, she felt the story could help in saving lives. The actress further wrote:

“Thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. so yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. i love you.”

In another recent Instagram post, Sydney Sweeney said that working on the film was a memorable experience for her. She also praised the crew members for everything they did to bring the film to fruition.
