Ellen DeGeneres is facing public backlash once again, this time stemming from behavior which ultimately led to a car accident in California in 2023. TMZ was the first to break the news on September 12.
Later, in official legal documents obtained by PEOPLE, it was revealed that the former talk show personality has been accused of being directly responsible for a vehicular collision in Santa Barbara County.
“A woman is claiming that on Oct. 16, 2023, the former talk show host, 67, ignored a stop sign while driving in Santa Barbara County, and as a result, ’t-boned’ the woman's car.”
As of this report, there has been no official statement released on the subject by either Ellen DeGeneres or her representatives.
Ellen DeGeneres - new lawsuit explained
The plaintiff in the case and Ellen DeGeneres’ accuser states that the comedian’s negligence was at the root of an entirely avoidable situation, as she was proceeding prudently. According to the exact verbiage from the suit,
“Ellen DeGeneres entered the intersection without stopping at the stop sign.”
This perceived
“negligent conduct [that] fell below the standard of care of a reasonable person,”
gives credence to the defence’s case that the events were
“negligently caused, or contributed to causing plaintiff's vehicle to be collided with by the defendants' vehicle.”
The plaintiff is also claiming injuries, damages and wage losses as a result of her run-in with DeGeneres.
Ellen DeGeneres moved to the UK in 2024 alongside wife Portia de Rossi in the wake of several controversies that soured public opinion towards the once beloved star. It is rumored that she was attempting a comeback as per The Blast, although a source plugged into the situation shared a grim outlook on her chances when speaking with the National Enquirer.
"The whole point of Ellen going to the U.K. was to let the dust settle on the bullying scandal. Her goal has always been to make a comeback. She's just been waiting for enough time to pass.”
