Emerald Fennell is bringing in a fresh twist to Emily Brontë's classic, Wuthering Heights, and all the sneak peeks have already gotten fans talking. Marketed as a gothic erotic drama, the film stars Margot Robbie as Catherine and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff as they navigate the challenges of their lives and their profound love for each other. It's one of the most highly anticipated films for next year, as chatter has followed its premise, its casting, and its unprecedented themes.
In an interview with the BBC, Fennell opened up about adapting the classic novel into a modern film as she talked about how she perceived the project and said,
“I wanted to make something that made me feel like I felt when I first read it, which means that it’s an emotional response to something. It’s, like, primal, sexual. There’s an enormous amount of sadomasochism in this book.”
Jacob Elordi’s casting as Heathcliff has stirred controversy, as the character was originally described in the novel as a man of color. After the initial announcements and the teaser was out, mild backlash followed from people who called out the casting as unfit. Fennell, however, disagrees. The director talked about how Elordi felt like her perfect Heathcliff as she said,
“[He] looked exactly like the illustration of Heathcliff on the first book that I read...I had been thinking about making [‘Wuthering Heights’], and it seemed to me he had the thing… he’s a very surprising actor.”
Talking about Robbie's casting, she added that the Barbie actress is “not like anyone I’ve ever met — ever," as she continued,
“[She is] so beautiful and interesting and surprising, and she is the type of person who, like Cathy, could get away with anything. I think honestly she could commit a killing spree and nobody would mind. So it needed somebody like Margot, who’s a star, not just an incredible actress"
More details on Wuthering Heights

Emerald Fennell’s bold reimagining of Wuthering Heights as a gothic erotic drama has become a major talking point. As Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi step into the two iconic roles, the film has become one of the most talked-about projects of 2026.
Warner Bros. secured the film after a heated bidding war, ultimately choosing a theatrical release over Netflix’s more lucrative offer. Filmed on 35mm across the windswept Yorkshire Dales, the movie leans into atmosphere, with Linus Sandgren’s cinematography capturing the wild, untamed landscapes. Anthony Willis composes the score, while Charli XCX brings a modern edge with original songs.
The supporting cast includes Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, and Alison Oliver, with rising newcomers Owen Cooper and Charlotte Mellington playing Elordi and Robbie's younger selves.
Wuthering Heights will be in theaters on February 13, 2026.
